185. "Scandals whether in politics, academia, or other areas can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
Scandals, always related to depravity and disgrace come out in aspects of our life. Through scandals people would find the world an immoral, depraved and evil one, therefore become pessimistic toward everyday life. Attitudes depend. Virtually, scandals reveal an objective world inevitably filled with problems and they can help us to acknowledge and solve the social problems to make the society improved
Firstly, bombastic scandal description plays a negative role to both individuals and society. On one hand, the exaggerated scandal would do harm to the people who is involved in the matter. The overstatement and immoderate criticism should provide an explanation for the anguish on the one involved. On the other hand, they profoundly effect the general populace as well, to whom distorted information is being transmitted thus they may be lead to a pessimistic attitude towards life, as aptly illustrated by what happened in our province. Last year, an official in our province was convicted to bribe. The press reported this exaggeratedly, alleging that bribe exited universally in the government. From then on, the populace did not trust the government as before, concluding that the officials in the government did not remain working for the benefit of the populace but for themselves, which is really do harm to the stabilities of the whole society, by the way, the official involved finally laid hands on himself for the fierce condemnation from the press and the populace.
Secondly, to some extent, scandals are instructive and contribute to an advanced society, by calling our attention to pervasive social problems that we would otherwise neglect. For example, the education briberies scandals in China focused the Chinese attention on the education system and resulted in an extensive reform of education. Another striking example is smuggle committed by the customs officers, that is the customs officers themselves were involved in, giving green lights to smuggle from which they will be benefited. But for the scandals we would not realize that there are such malfeasances in our enlightened society. The two examples strongly showed that no public speaker or reformer could have called the populace attention to such problems. Scandal better reveals facts. A heightened awareness of scandal can tell us a series of social issues to be addressed, and also from scandal we could apply the lessons.
In sum, scandal is useful only insofar as it is faithfully reported and proper attention is to be paid. The media is playing a vital role and is responsible for the authenticity of scandal while the populace should not exert too much attention to the scandal itself, but reflecting in finding the root of the scandal, and solving inner social problems. Only by doing this, can our society improved.
