185(频数64次)"Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
1.Scandals can focus our attention and accelerate the process of solving problems.
2.Scandals can expose problems under the shadow of successes or hornors
3.However, some scandals are only a waste of money and time and distract us from other important problems.
Today, scandals are being exposed more and more on TV, newspaper or other mass media. In some aspects, in my opinion, scandals, with stronger power than any speaker or reformers ever hold, do focus the public attention to problems of individuals and our society, while the negative effect of scandals should not be neglected which cause harm not only to the famous people involved but also to the public.
Firstly, scandals have its particular way to fix the public attention, thereby accelerate the process of solving problems which may have been under the table for years. People are always curious about scandals that a scandal may become the focus of the entire world, while speeches given by speakers or programs held by reformers can never have this effect. Take Enron scandal as an example, the huge energy corporation broke down almost in one nigh, and followed by uncountable reports from mass media. Then, they found that Enron had donated a great number of money to the president when in the presidential campaign in order to gain benefits from energy regulations made by the government. The scandal exposes the background of the presidential campaign to the public for the first time, and force the government to make a series of steps to avoid similar things.
Secondly, scandals, especially in politics and academia, can show problems under the shadow of successes or honors to the public. Different from speaker or reformer, scandals expose problems in a more direct way. Though scandals themselves seem superficial, the problems under them are always critical and inevitable. Recently, scandals in academia become a popular topic through the whole world. Professors and researchers start to think about the flaws in the recent process of elevating and praising, and pay more attention on avoiding academic cheat. Without scandals exposed to the public, people can never see how serious this problem is.
However, the other side of scandals that it takes much more time and money on the scandals themselves rather than solving problem is also obvious. When the media happens to meet an incident which may turn to a scandal, the only thing they want is to report as much as they can to gain profits instead of trying to solve the problem. Scandals about sports stars or movie stars often exist in the media, while little of the scandals reflect flaws about the society or even only about particular fields. This kind of scandals only distracts us from other things such as society security and poverty which need the public to focus on. Furthermore, scandals are also used by politicians as weapons to attack their opponents or are used by actors or singers to draw the public attention, most of which are just made up.
To sum up, some scandals focus the public attention on problems we have not noticed and need to be solved, in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could. Scandals accelerate the process of solving problems, while some scandals are only a waste of money and useless to the society. Thereby, the function of scandals need be treated separately.
