73The following appeared in a memo from a manager of a car dealership.

"Ten years ago, long-term car leasing became available in our country of Mohilia as an alternative to outright car ownership, and leasing has steadily risen in popularity. For each of the last five years, the number of people leasing new cars has surpassed the number buying new cars. The average age of cars driven in Mohilia is six years; hence, if new car leases again outnumber purchases this year, it is likely that the majority of drivers will be driving leased, not individually owned, cars. Therefore, we should change the focus of our business from selling cars to leasing them."
10年前,长期汽车租赁在我们Mohilia国家出现,成为对于汽车完全所有权的一种补充,这种租赁业务的受欢迎度也逐渐增加。过去五年的每一年中,租赁新车的人数都超过了买新车的人数。Mohilia的汽车平均使用时间为6年;因此,如果新车租赁在今年又一次超过购买,有可能大多数驾驶员将会开租来的车而不是私人拥有的车。因此,我们应该把业务重点从出售车辆转向租赁车辆。

提纲
1,        过去5年租车的多于买车的不代表一直会多于买车的。可能是因为经济困难,组车为打开市场从而价格特别优惠等等,但这些问题和活动一旦不存在租车就不一定火了
2,        即使人们一直喜欢租车也有可能人们只爱租新车而不是旧车?新车从哪里来?还是需要买。而且,除了租车人们还可以买2手车
3,        即使租车的人是很多也不一定能赢利,有可能租车价格很低,甚至不能用来填补零件磨损消耗。这样一来,有可能租10个车赚的钱还没有卖一个车多,所以即使人数多也不一定为公司赢利。而且,从卖车转为租车,是否熟悉这种经营模式?是否和其他租车公司比有竞争力?如果不,同样也不能赚钱。

正文,
The argument seems to be plausible at first glance in light of some premises the arguer presents to back up his ratiocination, such as the marketing survey of the last five years, the conclusion gained from the assumption that car leases still surpass car pruchases. Upon a closer scrutiny, however, some fallacies concealed in the analysis will betray the author’s reasoning in that he fails to take into consideration other factors which may bear the immediate interest to the underlying occasion of the arugument.

First and foremost, people’s perference to leasing cars in the past five years is not representative enough to be cited so as to demonstrate car leases’ superiority over car-purchases forever. In most events, there lies the possibility that people opt for car leases because they encounter economic hardship at that time and they can retrench expense by renting cars. If this turns out to be the case, as long as people are free of these economic difficulties, they may not selet lease as their inclination. It’s also possible that the car- lease market adopts some measures, say, discount, in order to promote car lease. Meanwhile, people are attatched to these activities and therefore they choose to rent cars. Nevertheless, these activities will not last forever, therefore, upon it’s end, people may not rent cars. With regard to this, car- lease’s prevalence in the past five years cannot be used to validate the arguer’s conclusion that the trend of car-lease is better than that of car- purchases.

Deep down, concession granted that people prefer to rent cars always, the likelihood still existes that people only tend to rent new cars, in this sense, car-lease dealers still have to buy new cars for lease. Consequently, selling cars by all means will remain prevail as a precondition for new car leases. What’s more, besides renting cars, there still other alternatives for buying new cars, for example, buying second-hand cars, as a result, car-lease is not the exclusive substitution for car-purchase and it cannot seize hold of the car market anyway.

Last but not least, when it comes to the conclusion that car dealers should transmit their business focus from selling cars to leasing cars, we as well have sound reasons to doubt its credibility and feasibility. For the benefit of the company, it’s undeniable any strategy should be aimed at gaining more profit. Under such a circumstance, we have to compare the profit between car-lease and car-purchase. Consider, if the profit gained from leasing ten cars is much lower than the net profit winned from selling even one car, it’s obvious that the above demonstration of car-lease’s superiority in number is meaningless. In addition, there lies the possibility that the company who used to running car-selling will not be familiar with car-lease. If so, it would not be competitive in the market and thus it stands more chance to fail.

In sum, having viewed all the aspects above, we do not feel difficult to draw the conclusion that the raticination is neither persuasive nor convincing. In order make it compelling, it’s highly recommeded that the writer inspect the issue in a more all-rounded perspective, he should take into calculation the net profit gained from selling cars and leasing cars respectively, the credibility of the past five years’ market condition, other alternatives besides renting cars and so on.

不过观点很清晰,论证也有力.结构清楚.
