TOPIC: ISSUE43 - "To be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards."
( This composition has been revised once.)
提纲:有保留的赞同a leader should keep a high level of moral and ethical standards, yet not the highest
1 为什么要保持高的道德和伦理标准以及对一个成功的领导有什么帮助。
2 然而人性有污点,不可能要求每个领导者保持最高的道德和伦理。
3 一个成功的领导者还应该具备其它方面的品质。
Is it the truth that a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards in order to be an effective leader? I agree with the speaker with my reservation-to be succeed in one's field and achieve his or her ultimate goals, a leader should maintain a high level of morality and ethics, yet not the highest. To further illustrate my viewpoint, I insist that an effective leader should have some other important qualities.
To begin with, I turn my agreement to the statement on the foundation that a leader, no matter in politics or business, he/she should keep a high level of moral and ethical standards. For one thing, in the field of politics, a politician who possesses the precious quality would win the electorate and respect of his opponents. Consider Ronald Reagan-the previous American president, serve to the public with the great loyalty and honesty, which ultimately won him all American people's favors and credibility. In the contrast, another president of America-Nixon, who utilized the cheating method to acquire the maintaining of political power, finally forfeit his reputation and leadership. Thus, it is the superior merits characterized by high moral and ethical standard that guarantee an politician to obtain his/her political power and achieve his goal at last.
For another thing, the quality of high standards of morality and ethics could contributes the political or commercial leader to keep an ordinary heart, which, in other words, means he would not commit the corruption or not allow similar incidence to happen. It is the lesson of Enron that makes all the executives in the business world know that the cheating behaviors such as withdrawing information from the customers will bring the company the detrimental consequence, even a bankrupt. However, to the social-spiritual leaders, there is no denying that they should keep the highest morality and ethnics. Concerning Martin Luther King and Gandhi, without these treasured characters, they can not arouse the public aspirations for equality and freedom, and let alone to achieve their optimal political items. Therefore, the quality of high morality and ethics plays an essential role in the success of an effective leader in the politics, business field but when it comes to the social-spiritual realm, it requires the leaders to own the highest criterion of morality and ethics.
Nevertheless, the definition of a successful leader who is qualified of high morality and ethics cannot be applied equally to a moralist. As we known, humans, including the most effective and efficient leaders, have the inherent taints with their characters. We cannot expect them to be the perfect one as well as the moralist. For the supporting example one needs to look no further than Bill Clinton, though his private life has ever been disclosed by the mass media, no one would deny his successful leadership by restoring the depressed economy of America during his tenure regardless of his sex scandal which has even brought deleterious influence to his reputation. And we could find support from another effective leader in America-John Kennedy, who experienced the marital discretion, also proved his successful leadership by implementing many effective policies which benefits the public a lot. Thus, an effective leader is not equivalent to a moralist, he/she has some tiny human taints but these shortages of his/her characters cannot overwhelm his/her prominent leadership and significant contribution to both individuals and society as a whole.
In addition, we should shift our focus on some other qualities which have equal importance for a leader to succeed in his/her realm, for example, the insight and foresight, the enterprise and perseverance, the creativity and originality, and so forth. Understandably, it is the unique perception and foresight that lead young Bill Gates to discover the tremendously potential software market while IBM and Ipod were scrambling intensively for the hardware market, and it is the creativity and originality that conduct him to design the first computer system--MS-DOS and further erected the status of Microsoft in the austere competition of business world, and more importantly, it is the enterprise and persistence that contribute him to establish the Microsoft empire and made him become the richest person in the world. Therefore, only depending on a high level of morality and ethics, I am hard-pressed to imagine a public officer or a common person could become an effective leader.
To sum up, I concede the statement insofar as keeping a high morality and ethics is one of the elements for a person’ success in his/her field, however, except for the realm of social-spirit, we should not overemphasize the quality to the extent of the highest morality while underestimating other necessary qualities which are also indispensable for a would-be effective leader. |
