TOPIC:ARGUMENT 76 - The following appeared as part of an article in a health and beauty magazine.

"A group of volunteers participated in a study of consumer responses to the new Luxess face cream. Every morning for a month, they washed their faces with mild soap and then applied Luxess. At the end of that month, most volunteers reported a marked improvement in the way their skin looked and felt. Thus it appears that Luxess is truly effective in improving the condition of facial skin."

Prior to accepting the recommendation that Luxess is truly effective in improving the condition of facial skin, the evidence presented in this argument requires an in-depth scrutiny from several aspects, by doing which, I find that the author seems to have unduly relied on the problematic study and thus draws a conclusion that is fundamentally flawed.

To begin with, the study, as the only evidence invoked in this argument, is insufficient to bolster the author's postulation. In fact, we are not informed any information about the total number of sample and also whether it can represent the people as a whole. For that matter, we have good reasons to doubt its credibility if the volunteers all have excellent condition of skin before or they may be doctors and thus know exactly how to maintain their good-looking skin. Moreover, the author also fails to provide any evidence about the place where the volunteers come from. Perhaps they are all chosen from a certain district where the natural condition is quite suitable for one's skin. Since the author fails to respond to these concerns, the study quoted in this argument lends little support to this argument.

In addition, the author also illogically presumes that the improvement in the way the volunteers' skin looks and felt must be attributable to the employment of Luxess merely based upon the evidence, which, however, may not be the case either. As we know, the improvement of one's skin can depend on several factors, such as climate, gene, emotion and even psychological feelings. In that case, it is entirely possible that during this month, they experienced a promotion in the workplace or got a high mark in one examination, both of which is presumed to lead to the improvements of their skin. Furthermore, as mentioned in the argument that before applying Luxess the volunteers also used the mild soap first. However, the point is that the author provides no information about the ingredient of the mild soap. Correspondingly, there is a good chance that some special elements contained in the mild soap contribute to their better skin rather than by using Luxess as the author claims. Hence, without taking into consideration these possibilities, the authenticity and credibility of this argument cannot be justified.

Before coming to finish my analysis, we might as well turn our focus to the author's conclusion which unfairly suggests that Luxess is really useful in ameliorating the condition of facial skin. Even if we concede that Luxess do play a leading role in improving the way skin looked and felt, it is nevertheless perfunctory to conclude that the overall condition of facial skin would become better. Perhaps they may just look better, but what about other problems, say, facial disease or deficiency of gene? If true, the conclusion would be premature at best.

To sum up, the argument is weakened by the flaws discussed above. Much work is needed before drawing a convincible conclusion; otherwise, the argument would be unfounded.
Forge ahead, never retreat!

Prior to accepting the recommendation that Luxess is truly effective in improving the condition of facial skin, the evidence presented in this argument requires an in-depth scrutiny from several aspects, by doing which, I find that the author seems to have unduly relied on the problematic study and thus draws a conclusion that is fundamentally flawed.(开头很好!)

Since the author fails to respond to these concerns, the study quoted in this argument lends little support to this argument.(这段的驳斥 很细致,对于study的驳斥很到位!)

In that case, it is entirely possible that during this month, they experienced a promotion in the workplace or got a high mark in one examination, both of which is presumed to lead to the improvements of their skin.(这点我当时没想到!好!) Furthermore, as mentioned in the argument that before applying Luxess the volunteers also used the mild soap first.

Perhaps they may just look better, but what about other problems, say, facial disease or deficiency of gene? If true, the conclusion would be premature at best. (这点我以前没想过,也没有这么仔细的分辩,我觉得很细!)

To sum up, the argument is weakened by the flaws discussed above. Much work is needed before drawing a convincible conclusion; otherwise, the argument would be unfounded.
文章写得好,我想提点意见:关于respondents之类的词是常见的驳斥点,可以在写study的过程中进行驳斥,还有most也可以进行批驳。当然你写的这几个足够了,而且字数也不少了,实战中写这么多足矣!加油!
