hi, I think i can answer your qn. i am currently in UCD.
TA, for most of depts, is gonna be $1600 (before tax) for 50% time (20hr per week). The tax here is relatively high. The federal tax rate is roughly at 11% plus state tax at 3% plus some unfigured federal tax (i am not clear). If you have been employed as a TA, then your dept will pay your tuition (very expensive, about $42000, seems to be higher this year). so you dont need to worry about that. if your tax is 50% time work, then there is no problem with your daily expense.

here, the house rental is ranging from $300 to 1000 or more per person. Depending how many persons share a flat and how expensive of the flat. For most chinese student, we share a 2 or 3-bedroom flat. The cost in food is low ($100-200) here, if you dont eat out quite often. Unfortunately, there are no good chinese resturants in Davis. The nearest city we can go for chinese food is Sacramento.

Davis is a very nice place to stay and study. Small, quiet and safe, also good weather. Local residents (about 40k) are friendly. The location of Davis is also good, near sacamento and also San Francisco (less than 100mi). Wish you can finally come to Davis.
