题目:ISSUE 212 - "If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable."
字数:579words
Every one has the desire of achieving the aims he/she has anticipated and realizing his/her dreams. Whether it is justifiable to take any means to attain a goal becomes a realistic problems which everyone will encounter. I cherish the belief that the answer alter according to different situations.
At first, the answer should be determined by who would benefit from the goal. If a goal is worthy for all the human beings or the majority of a society, it is justifiable to take any means to achieve the target. An illuminating example is the Second World War. In order to satisfy individual aspiration of being the supreme of the world, Hitler campaigned a calamity to all the human beings. In addition, with an unreasonable discrimination toward Jews, he decimated Jews without humanity. All the people resented Hitler's autocracy and began to fight against him. Although the war cost thousands of lives and brought injuries to countless soldiers, it is worthy of taking any means to accomplish the goal of ending the nightmare of all the human beings and reconstructing a peaceful world again. Therefore, given most people will benefit from the goal, any methods taken to attain it is justifiable.
Nonetheless, sometimes, such goal conflicts with the future which is also paramount to the society. In this circumstance, the most appropriate measure is to find a balance between the current benefit and the future needs. The case which can expound the point best is the dilemma of choosing between the development of industry and the environment. If we choose to take any means to protect the environment and stop all the factories, the society would face innumerous problems such as unemployment, the stagnancy of the society, etc. On the other hand, if we choose to take any means to develop the industry, the earth would be improper for any creatures to live in a foreseeable future. Both of the two sides can benefit all the people, but neither of them should be taken any means to develop. A balance, such as sustainable development, which can ensure the industrial progress while keep friendly to the nature is the most intellectual choice.
If the goal is the one which an individual strives to, I claim that to achieve it, one should take more into account rather than taking any means. First, the path to success cannot be aberrant from normal ethics and morality. For instance, when making progress in science and pursuing reputation of oneself, a scientist must keep scientific spirit. No matter how worthy the goal is, it is not advocated for the scientists to take the means of selecting favorable statistics or trump up fake experimental result or even plagiarize from others. Second, the method to accomplish goal can not do harm to others. Take a running race for example. Every athlete aspires to win, but one can not hurt others to ensure one’s own victory. Victory is precious while an fair and egalitarian method should be taken above board. In one word, chasing for individual achievement, one must not put others’ interests and societal regulation aside.
All in all, seldom goal is worthy enough for people to take any means to achieve. When we make a decision to accomplish something, we should take various aspects, say, the cost, the impact, the consequence in the future and so on, into consideration and then choose a best and most appropriate way and finally make every effort to reach the goal. |
