题目
Issue50 "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

I agree that to require teachers to go out of the school and take some jobs relevant to the courses they teach do have some benefits, however, I do not think such requirement is suitable for all faculty and all courses.
Admittedly, for some popular courses, such as computer science, communication, economy, and the like, to learn about the newest information is very important, but to work outside the academic world is not the only efficient way. One of the most vital task for college or university is to teach the advanced knowledge and technology to students and make them prepared for the future jobs, so the teachers should know what kinds of knowledge are needed in the companies, otherwise, their teaching contents maybe not coincide with the needs. Take China as an example, in the past, college educations often consider little of the society's need. The direct result is when students enter the working companies, they will find what they learned at school almost has no relation with their jobs and they have to study again. Fortunately, in recent years, many colleges have learned the problems and began to ask the teachers to take the society's needs into accounts when they arrange the teaching plans. Then how can teachers know the society's needs? The speaker thinks schools should require teachers to work at the companies, but I do not think it is the only way. In fact, with the rapid development of media, there are many methods to attain the newest information and learn about the society. For example, teachers can take part in academic councils to communicate each other; they can also learn the outside world through newspaper, magazine, Internet, and etc.
On contrary, for some basic courses, such as math, physics, chemistry, etc, they are not changed frequently and mainly depend on the laboratorial researches, and to work outside is not necessary. The contents of such courses are always relatively const except there are some new findings and the findings mainly take place at research labs. Consequently, to ask teachers relevant to such courses to work outside maybe have little benefit for their teaching.
Finally, the jobs out of the school maybe distract much energy of teachers, which possibly decline the teaching qualities. On the one hand, the outside jobs are possible to occupy lots of time of the teachers, and make the teachers have less time to prepare for the teaching. On the other hand, many teachers may be reluctant to work outside and they only want to teach and research at school, so to force them to do that will have little effect.
To sum up, such requirement has both advantages and disadvantages, so it should be treated separately for different courses. Besides, the degree should be controlled well, that is, on the one hand, to try to benefit from the activities, on the other hand, not to disturb the normal teaching plans. |
