题目
Issue212 "If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable."

What kind of goal can be proved to be worthy? If the answer is goal that can create value or fulfill one's wish, I have to say that only worth is not sufficient to judge that any means taken to attain it is justifiable. Admittedly, to try best to attain a goal is encouraged, however, the means should not be illegal or conflict with the moral or ethical standards.
First of all, we should praise the spirit to try any means to accomplish a goal since it is the only way to succeed. Nearly no goal can be attained easily, and every goal needs the personal efforts and wisdoms. It is very common that one succeeds after many times of failure. The spirit of insistence is also a necessary character for one's success. If one gives up after a few times of failure and does not try other means, his goal will never be taken into reality. Even if he changes his goal, he will fail again. The spirit is also needed during the science studies. Without the courage of insistence and the wisdom of altering other means for the scientists, there will not be the current advanced society. Edison inventing bulbs is a good example. Before he finally invented the bulb, he experienced countless times of failure; however, just because of his insistence and effects, he succeeded at last.
However, we have to emphasize that to attain one's own goal should never damage other people's profits and disobey the laws. Take a extreme example. If someone thinks earning a great amount of money as his goal, can he attain it by robbing the banks or other people? Of course the method is not justifiable, what is more, it has broken the laws, thus what he will attain is not the money but the punishment or imprisonment. Consequently, we can conclude that even if a goal is worthy, people still should take legal means to fulfill it.
Moreover, the means taken to attain a goal should also consider the moral or ethical standards. Although sometimes the means taken to attain a goal does not break the laws, it possibly does not conform to the moral or ethical standards, and then it is still not justifiable. For instance, some scientists try to clone human, though the goal may be worthy from the view of those scientists and some countries also do not forbid such study using law, but considering from ethics, the study should not be continued because it can bring unexpectable problems to the society.
To sum up, the effects trying to fulfill a worthy goal should be praised, however, they must be in the region of laws and moralities, otherwise, no matter how worthy is the goal, it is still unjustifiable. |
