一．什么是GRE词汇
所谓GRE词汇，其实是人为界定出来的概念，并没有像四六级那样的考纲。广义地说，已经出现在GRE中和可能出现的单词，都是GRE词汇，包括数学部分出现的一些较专业的词汇。狭义地讲，GRE中的类比和反义题直接依赖词汇，所以类反词汇的考察角度大多打上了GRE的烙印。以下提到的词汇，指得是广义概念上的。

二．为什么要学习GRE词汇
攻克GRE的第一个难点，就是攻克词汇。初学者往往会因为词汇的硬伤抱怨甚至放弃GRE，其实：首先，词汇不是造成错误的唯一原因；其次，真正的难题有不少并不是难在词汇。但是，提升词汇实力仍然是提升GRE分数的第一步，甚至是捷径。类反就不用说了，填空中很多题目就是考察对词汇各个角度的理解。像四六级这样的考试，或许不专门学习词汇也能考不错的分数，但是不背单词是不能应付GRE的。虽然工作量大，但是词汇重复率也高，突破词汇还是明智之举。

三．GRE词汇的特点：
1）  数量多，18000－20000左右。对于著名的Brown语料库，15000个单词可以涵盖其内容的95％－97％。也就是说GRE单词是足够应付专业级英文阅读的，所以数量多也不足为怪。
2）  并不神秘，也用不着恐慌。很多常见词（四六级单词，TOEFL常考单词），甚至口语词汇，都是GRE单词。
3）  确实有一部分词汇远离日常生活，甚至远离今后个人的专业领域。但是最终到北美留学深造时会发现，各类科技文献中充斥着GRE单词。通过考GRE把这些单词掌握后，以后的论文阅读和写作就有了很好的基础。
4）  和考生的专业背景无关。和GRE其他部分的出题原则一样，任何专业的考生在GRE单词面前一律平等。所以，不需要掌握各专业的词汇。
5）  直接影响得分的核心词汇恒定，历史考题中核心词汇重现率高。如果认真突破了词汇，一次考试中出现的影响得分的新词至多3个。
6）  GRE词汇的学习基本和考生英语实力以及前期词汇量没有必然关系。和智力水平也没有太大关系，只和投入的时间和方法有关。

四．学习GRE词汇的方法
       1）使用词汇书，集中突破。如果把GRE词汇原始积累看成短期的过程，收效将是长期的；如果看成长期的过程，收效将是零。书籍的选择上，为了GRE专门编写的红宝书，巴朗词表和其他一些都不错。
       2）大量阅读，刷新记忆。利用新内容巩固记忆的强度，制造新的兴奋点。在记忆的过程中，遗忘带来的挫折感甚至痛苦，只有记忆刷新的成就感才能抚慰。中期做题时，如果不顺利的时候，也可以背单词。
       3）配合做题，加深理解。中期开始，在前期初背词汇的基础上，利用真题来查缺补漏。背词是为了做题，词汇只是工具而非目的。所以可以通过真体来调节和检阅背词的效果。单词真正的考法只有通过真题才能得到完全的体现。后期的时候复习重点就应该完全转移到题目上来了。
       4）第一遍过单词遗忘率是很高的，肯定比后面高。所以没必要纠缠细节，能快就快。可以说初记的重要效果就是全面了解对手，和遗忘做斗争是后面阶段的任务。
       5）背词典和考GRE没有关系。光光为了考GRE，是没有人任何必要背词典的。这是因为很多GRE单词是没有必要理解非常细微含义的，只要看见英文头脑中立即出来中文就可以了。即使有时间和兴趣在复习GRE的同时背词典，也应该在熟背词汇书之后。其实除了及其少数单词，GRE单词考察的都是3层以内的含义，背了单词所有的含义对解题没有正面的帮助，反而会在考题面前不能迅速反应出正确含义，这是背词典一个巨大的副作用。
       6）不必抄写全部单词。部分GRE单词确实是写作中可以使用的，但是大部分单词只要看见拼写，能反应出含义就可以了，没有必要通过抄写刺激来加深记忆。况且抄写有时候并不能改善记忆效果。
       7）睡前一定要背。睡前没有后摄干扰。更为重要的是，人的大脑各个区域各司其职，而掌管长期记忆和短期记忆的部分在睡眠时，是保持通讯的（较新科学研究发现）。所以睡前细背或者浏览的词汇，在睡后很可能就沉淀转化为长期记忆的对象了。

五．词典的选择
       1）要涵盖GRE词汇。可以从红宝书中挑选比较冷僻怪异的词汇进行测试。一些小词典显然不会涵盖这些单词。8万以上词条的词典一般就满足这个要求。
       2）可以将Webster Collegiate Dictionary 和 Longman配合使用。前者是Webster家族的重要学术成员，而Webster作为GRE出题的参考词典，是所有词汇考点的最终参考依据，是遇到难题时求助的唯一法宝。但是由于前者的词条解释中仍然后大量难词，所以可以在释义用词仍然不明白的情况下，求助后者。因为后者仅2000释义用词。
