What are the Minimum Requirements for all ECE applicants?
The ECE Department looks for all applicants to be able to meet the following minimum criteria:

GPA: Minimum Grade Point Average: 3.5/4.0 or above
Class Standing: Student should be in the Top 5% of their class or above
GREs: 500-Verbal, 750-Quantitative, 750/5.0-Analytical.
TOEFL: 105-web based, 250-computer based, 600-paper based.

Please note, however, that the admission decision is not based only on GPA and standard test scores; we look at a wide variety of factors. If you have slightly lower scores or GPA but have other strengths that mitigate the weaknesses in the above quantitative metrics, we would encourage you apply.

The minimum graduate admission requirements are:

1. A bachelor's degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution.
2. A satisfactory scholastic average, with a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) if you attended an American university or a university that uses a similar 4.0 scale.
3. The General Test of the Graduate Record Examination. (GRE)

I have a B.S. in engineering. Can I apply to the Ph.D. program directly?
Yes. Applicants whose ultimate degree goal is the Ph.D. should indicate this on their application by marking M.S./Ph.D. or Ph.D. as the degree goal. The statement of purpose should reflect this goal. Applicants who already have an M.S. degree from another institution should apply directly to the Ph.D. program.

What is the minimum TOEFL score I need to be considered for admission?
The minimum TOEFL score required by U.C. Berkeley for graduate admission is 570 on the paper and pencil test, 230 on the computer based test and 68 on the iBT. Applicants with a score below this will not be admitted.

International applicants appointed as a Graduate Student Instructor must pass the English language proficiency exam (with a minimum score of 50) before starting their appointment. The Test of Spoken English (TSE) is given by the Educational Testing Service in your home country.

BTW: I did not find the minimum requirement for G, but I found that most of their current students got scores like:
1) TOEFL Score: 270, Essay rating: 6.0 GRE Score: Verbal 690, Quantitive 800
2) GRE : 2380 / 2400 Verbal : 780 / 800 Analytical : 800 / 800 Quantitative : 800 / 800. TOEFL : 280 / 300.
3) GRE Score 2340  Verbal 740 Quantitative 800

What are the minimum GRE and GPA requirements?
There is no minimum GRE or GPA requirement.  The Admissions Committee reviews each aspect of every application before coming to a decision.

I've taken the GRE more than once.  Which score will be received/reviewed?
The EE Department will receive each test score.  All scores will be reviewed.

Do I need to take the TSE exam?
No.  We do not require the TSE exam.  The TOEFL is sufficient.

Our application system is now entirely online. All of your application materials, including three letters of recommendation, self reported grades, self reported test scores, and personal statements must be submitted online.

What are the minimum acceptable GRE and TOEFL scores?
There are no minimum test score requirements. As a reference, however, the average GRE scores for the entering class of Fall 2004 were Verbal: 536, Quantitative: 783, and Analytical: 4.83, while the average TOEFL score was 263 (paper version 620+).

I am an international student. Should I take the TSE and TWE tests?
No, we do not require these exams. You do not need to take the TSE and TWE tests.

In the Fall 2005, we received 3,155 applications. The overall acceptance rate was 38%.

What is the percentage of foreign/international students?
In Fall 2005, the percentage of foreign/international students was approximately 52% of the incoming class. Students were admitted from 40 different countries.

Did not find any GPA requirements.

Mater: A bachelor's degree in Electrical and/or Computer Engineering with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 on a 4.0-point scale.
PhD:   A master's degree in Electrical and/or Computer Engineering with a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0-point scale and an undergraduate GPA of 3.2 or better.

The general Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The minimum expected scores are:
Verbal 600, Quantitative 730, Analytical 660. The subject GRE in engineering is not required.

In addition, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of all foreign applicants whose native language is not English. A minimum score of 250 is expected (paper version 600).

The ECE graduate program is consistently ranked in the top three nationwide. As you might expect, admission is very competitive. Students applying to the program must have a bachelor's degree in electrical or computer engineering (or related field). In the fall 2004 semester, the average GPA of applicants admitted and receiving financial aid was 3.86 (on a scale of 4.0 = A). Their average GRE percentile ranks were Quantitative (89.3%), Analytical (75.8%), and Verbal (74.5%).

The TOEFL score must be at least 590; however, if it is below 620, an English as Second Language Placement exam must be taken on the campus and the courses required by its results must be taken.

Are there separate admission procedures for Master's and PhD programs?
No. There is only one admission process. When we admit an applicant, it is into the PhD program. If you do not have a Master's degree when you apply, you will get that degree first before proceeding on to the PhD. If you already hold a Master's degree from another school, you can begin by working directly toward the PhD qualifiers.

What tests are necessary for applying to EECS?
The only test that is necessary is the TOEFL test for interntional students. We do NOT use any of the GRE test scores.

Most students who are accepted into ECE's graduate program have a degree in electrical and/or computer engineering. Applicants with degrees in other engineering disciplines, computer science, or physics are eligible to apply.

GPA:
Master's Program (Including Distance Learning)
Students with a Bachelor of Science degree as described above and with a minimum grade point average of 3.25 out of 4.0 from a recognized school of engineering are eligible to apply for admission.
Ph.D. Program
Students with bachelor of science or master of science degrees as described above with a minimum grade point average of 3.5 out of 4.0 from a recognized school of engineering are eligible to apply for admission.

Your GRE test scores are an important part of your application and you should strive to submit the best possible scores. The average GRE scores for applicants accepted into our graduate program for the past two years are:

TOEFL scores are mandatory for international students. Georgia Tech requires a minimum TOEFL score of 213 (computer based) or 550 (paper based).


The admission committee considers several factors when making admission decisions. Your academic performance at prior institutions (GPAs), your GRE test scores, your statement of purpose, and your letters of recommendation. All of these factors are important. Your application will be strengthened if your GRE scores are at or above these average values. If your GRE scores are lower than these averages, your chances for admission will be reduced and, if your scores are very low (ie., below 400V, 700Q, and 3.5AW), your application will be declined. Furthermore, meeting or exceeding these average numbers for GRE scores does not guarantee admission.

The Department offers the Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) degree in Electrical Engineering or Systems Engineering and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD degree in Electrical & Systems Engineering.

GRE: required from PhD applicants, recommended for MSE applicants

English Proficiency: Applicants who are not citizens of countries where English is the main language must demonstrate proficiency in the English language. This is done by submitting Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores exceeding 250/600, or by furnishing proof of three full-time years of English medium study at the university level prior to matriculation.

As a general rule we advise students who wish to be competitive candidates to submit a minimum TOEFL score of 600/250 (paper based/computer based) and a combined GRE (general) score of 2160. However, we stress that these are guidelines only and that possession or lack of possession of such scores will not necessarily determine your admission to ESE.

We have a large and extremely well-qualified applicant pool. Emphasis for admission is put on letters of recommendation, the personal statement (specified area of research interest), previous degree curriculum, GPA and GRE scores. GPAs of our admitted applicants are generally above 3.0/4.0. GRE scores over 600 are generally indicators of a successful candidate(crystal: can I just use V400+Q800 instead of V600+Q600???), however, GREs are not used as a single indicator. A TOEFL score of more than 550 is required for international students. International students are required to submit a financial statement. Our faculty are looking for applicants with the highest potential for academic and research success.

Successful applicants to the MS program in Computer Science will generally have the following minimum qualifications:
1. Strong GRE Quantitative and Analytical scores. (Typical acceptable scores are near 700 for each of these sectios, or 4.0 or better on the new Analytical Writing section.)
2. Positive, specific recommendations.
3. Strong grades in relevant courses.
