UNIVERSITY OF OTAGO (New Zealand)
http://www.otago.ac.nz/
As New Zealand's first university, founded in 1869, Otago has earned an international reputation for the quality of its research and teaching.

In 2006 Otago will have over 20,000 students enrolled and has a presence in each of the four main cities of New Zealand - Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.

The academic and administrative centre of the University continues to be located in Dunedin, where the majority of students live and work.

The Christchurch and Wellington Schools of Medicine & Health Sciences are both key elements of the University of Otago's Health Sciences activities, providing clinical teaching for undergraduate medical students as well as conducting thriving research and postgraduate teaching programmes.

The University's facilities in central Auckland provide a resource and information centre for prospective Otago students, as well as a campus for a variety of mainly postgraduate academic programmes.

In addition, Otago has a vigorous Distance Education programme, teaching to locations throughout New Zealand and also to various sites in Australia and Fiji. Links with distance students are mainly by live audio network but increasingly through the Internet.

Staff are Otago's greatest asset, and the University's policy is to recruit academics and administrators of the highest international calibre. Otago has developed a strong focus on quality advancement and on strategies and processes that produce constant improvement.

Planning is a strong feature of management, with the principal planning documents indicating a course of development and continued expansion. Supporting the strategic plan are the Research Management Plan, the Teaching and Learning Plan, the International Activities Management Plan and the Quality Portfolio.

One of the pillars on which the University's international reputation is built is the quality of its leading-edge research in many fields. Teaching at Otago is closely related to scholarly research, with the result that most teaching is undertaken by academics who are at the forefront of relevant knowledge.

Otago's reputation also rests on the quality of its graduates. Employers and other key stakeholders confirm that our graduates are sought after and appreciated. There are over 50,000 Otago graduates living in all corners of the world, many occupying influential positions in industry, government and their communities.

WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY (USA)
http://news.wlu.edu/
Cradled between the Allegheny and Blue Ridge mountains in Lexington, Virginia, Washington and Lee University has, since 1749, produced not only peerless scholars, but principled leaders with a commitment to civility, service, and honor. One of the nation's top fifteen liberal arts colleges, W&L offers a unique convergence of arts & sciences, law, journalism and commerce.

Washington and Lee University is consistently ranked among the nation's top liberal arts colleges and is the ninth oldest institution of higher education in America. This private university was founded in 1749 as Augusta Academy, with the name later changed to Liberty Hall Academy (1776), Washington Academy (1798), Washington College (1813) and, in 1871, Washington and Lee University.

In 1796, George Washington saved the struggling Liberty Hall Academy when he gave the school its first major endowment gift--$20,000 worth of James River Canal stock. Robert E. Lee served as president from 1865 until his death in 1870. During his presidency, Lee inaugurated courses in business and journalism--the first launched by a college in the United States.

The School of Law has been an integral part of Washington and Lee since 1866. It has been a member of the Association of American Law Schools since 1920 and is accredited by the American Bar Association. A recent addition to Sydney Lewis Hall houses the personal and professional papers of the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Lewis F. Powell Jr. '29, '31L.

Washington and Lee is ranked among U. S. News & World Report's top 15 liberal arts colleges. The School of Law, an integral part of Washington and Lee since 1866, is ranked in the top 25 by U.S. News & World Report.

UNIVERSITY OF MALTA (Malta)
http://www.um.edu.mt/
The University of Malta traces its origins to the founding of the Collegium Melitense in 1592. This college was run by the Jesuits and catered for non-Jesuit students. In 1578, Pope Gregory XIII empowered the Jesuits to confer the degrees of Magister Philosphiae and Doctor Divinitas. However, other subjects such as Grammar and the Humanities were also taught.

Following the abatement of the plague of 1675, Grand Master Nicolò Cotoner appointed Fra Dr. Giuseppe Zammit as "lettore" in Anatomy and Surgery at the Sacra Infermeria on the 19th October 1676. Zammit went on to establish the first medical library on the island as well as a medicinal herbal garden in one of the ditches of Fort Saint Elmo.

After the expulsion of the Jesuit Order from Malta in 1768, Grand Master Pinto appropriated all the revenue accruing from its property on the island and established a "Pubblica Università di Studi Generali". The decree constituting the University was signed by Pinto on the 22nd November 1769. Two years later, a Collegio Medici was set up as one of the faculties making up the University. It appears that the Medical Faculty was the only one staffed solely by local lecturers, a tradition which has been maintained through the centuries.

During the brief French interregnum of 1798, Napoleon abolished the University. Fortunately, shortly after the French were forced to leave, Sir Alexander Ball re-instituted the University. During the British period the University's statutes and regulations were brought into line with universities in the United Kingdom. The present coat of arms and the motto "Ut Fructificemus Deo" were proposed in 1923 by the rector, Professor Sir Themistocles Zammit. Following the Second World War, the Library and support structures were strengthened. In 1968 a new Medical School was built near St Luke's Hospital in Guardamangia and, at the same time, the new campus at Msida was inaugurated.

The University is the highest teaching institution of the State and is open to all those who have the requisite qualifications. There are some 9000 students including 700 foreign students, following full or part-time degree and diploma courses, many of them run on the modular or credit system. In 2004, over 2000 students graduated in various disciplines. The degree courses at the University are designed to produce highly qualified professionals, with experience of research, who will play key roles in industry, commerce and public affairs in general.

Associated with the University is the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies while the campus is also home to the IMO International Maritime Law Institute and the International Ocean Institute Malta Operational Centre. The University of the Third Age was inaugurated in 1993 enjoys a large membership.

There are a number of fields which the University has identified as priority areas: relations with industry and the strengthening of the Engineering departments; the further development of information technology, computer science and artificial intelligence; the University's contribution to the improvement of primary and secondary education and the forging of inter-university links to stimulate a burgeoning of international educational exchange.

The University of Malta is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the Utrecht Network, the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP), the European Access Network (EAN), the European University Association (EUA), as well as the Santander Network and the Compostela Group. Through its European Unit, University of Malta students participate in programmes such as Erasmus, Leonardo and Comenius.

Malta, Gozo and Comino, the inhabited islands of the Maltese archipelago, lie at almost the exact geographical heart of the Mediterranean Sea. With Sicily some 60 miles to the North, Tripoli 220 miles to the South and Tunis 200 miles to the West, Malta is virtually at the crossroads between continents. The islands' strategic position has, in fact, made them subject to a succession of rulers, who in turn left their influence on the country and language as we know them today. Malta's pre-history dates back to 5000 B.C., whilst its documented past is traceable over a period of 2000 years.

In 1964 Malta obtained its political independence from Britain and in 1974 it became a Republic. Elections to the House of Representatives are held every five years. Malta is a member of the United Nations and its various organisations and ever since 1964 has taken an active role in United Nations affairs. In 1967 Malta launched the idea of seabed resources being the common heritage of mankind. Malta has been a member of the European Union since May 2004.

The national language is Maltese which is a complex derivative of Semitic and Romance languages using a primarily Latin alphabet but also including a number of additional letters which originate in the Arab language. English is also an official language. The climate is typically Mediterranean, having mild winters and hot summers. Malta has a population of 400,000 and is visited annually by over one million tourists. Air Malta and other international airlines link Malta with the major European and North African cities. There are daily connections to London (Heathrow and Gatwick Airports) and Rome as well as frequent direct flights to Milan, Brussels, Paris, Frankfurt, Athens, Tunis, Cairo, Tel Aviv and Dubai.

NANYANG TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY (Singapore)
http://www.ntu.edu.sg/publicportal/
Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is an established, research-intensive tertiary institution with a vision to be a global university of excellence in science and technology.

While NTU repositions itself for the knowledge-based economy, with science and engineering remaining at its core, no less important are the other professional schools that have established, or are in the process of establishing, an international reputation.

NTU was ranked 48th globally by The Times Higher Education Supplement in the 2005 ranking of the world's best universities. Placed 26th among technology universities, NTU remains well within the upper echelons of the world's best science and tech universities.

NTU has a strong engineering college ranked among the best in the Commonwealth; a business school with one of the top 100 MBA programs in the world; an internationally acclaimed National Institute of Education; one of the best Schools of Communications & Information in Asia; and a School of Biological Sciences playing a leading role in Singapore's Life Sciences initiative. The Institute of Defence & Strategic Studies is an international authority on terrorism. Over 2004 and 2005, three new Schools were added - the School of Humanities & Social Sciences, the School of Physical & Mathematical Sciences and the School of Art, Design & Media.

The 200-ha residential campus, located in the south-western part of Singapore, was originally developed by the Chinese community for a Chinese language university, Nanyang University in 1955. The university was established with donations from people from all walks of life and of all ethnicities in the region.  In 1981, Nanyang Technological Institute was established on this campus to educate engineers for the rapidly developing Singapore economy. In 1991, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) was inaugurated and in April 2006, NTU was corporatised as an autonomous university.

Focused on grooming global leaders ready for success in the high-tech economy of the 21st century, NTU launched The New Undergraduate Experience in 2003 to provide students a strong, broad academic foundation, professional preparation, global immersion and an unforgettable campus experience. While NTU's broad-based education that covers science and technology, business and the arts, entrepreneurial and leadership skills, prepare students for the global working world, its students also hone their leadership skills through residential living and self-governance. Not surprisingly, graduates of the university are sought-after and well-paid.

Strong international relationships and collaboration programmes is also a hallmark of the university. This includes the Singapore-MIT Alliance, Singapore-Stanford Partnership, Cornell-Nanyang Institute of Hospitality Management, Singapore-University of Washington Alliance in Bioengineering and in Financial Engineering with Carnegie Mellon University. NTU has also in place Global Immersion Programmes (GIP) with Peking University, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, University of Washington and Georgia Institute of Technology, universities in France, Sweden, Switzerland, and soon, India. GIP, which offers an exceptional multi-country experience of language, culture, industry and entrepreneurship, will cover 13 cities in five countries by 2006.
