In out modern times technology skyrocketingly developing,apparently our lives are becoming more and more comfortable.Seeing this ,some people concludes that the major goal of technological development is the promise of greater leisure by increasing our efficiency.Although the prospect of more leisure time is a particular reason why mankind is so much preoccupied with the technology nowadays, there are others, such as the achievement of greater material and intellectual riches. In a word ,technological advancement aims to meet a wide range of human needs not only limiting to pursue easy life.

Undoubtedly ,through the development of technology,our efficiency is increasing significantly,and then we have more leisure time accordingly.The introduction of diesel locomotives, for example,greatly enhance the efficiency of railroad operations,as a result ot which less time is wasted in commuting and correspondingly we have more leisure time to share with families, play in the park and pursue our own hobbies , to illustrate, philately ,numismatics and the like .In this sense ,the advancement in technology satisfies our needs for easier life.

In addition,other expectations of human life are realized by breakthrough in technology.With the invention of telephone,radio and television,one can hear the voice of another,chat with him and see him even if they may be on the opposite side of the globe.Not content with these advances,we are thrusting forward to the stars.By virtue of telescope,a great breakthrough in the field of astronomy,man can oberserve the stars and planets thousands of miles from the earth..Further advancement is expected to satisfy the  never-ending curiosity of human beings about the mysterious space.The satisfication of the eager of greater material and intellectual richer is,therefore,also the goal of technology development.

But we can not deny the fact that technological advances does bring us some new problems ,Based on which some opponent of technological advancement contradict  its aim is to satisfty human want.For instance,after the invention of computer,our daily jobs are more and more widely involved by computer.Thus, many have to stare at the screen for hours which is bad for our vision.However,we must admit the object of the wide use of computer is to make our work more efficient,while the eyes’ problem is not the intention but an unexpected byproduct.Moreover,we can make a new need satisfied to eliminate the side-effect of involvement of computer through the

After the analyses of the foregoing reasons and cases as for the goal of technological advancement, we can easily arrive at the conclusion that its goal is to meet a wide and ever-growing range of human needs:greater ease , greater physical and spiritual riches.

The most significant issue in this century is the development of technology. The fruit which technologies bring us is more than the sum of the whole ever past centuries. So some people assert that technological advancements should be to increase people's efficiency so that everyone will has more leisure time. I agree that technologies really increase people's efficiency but whether everyone has more leisure time is not decided just on technology and people in fact don’t enjoy more leisure time.

To begin with, technologies increase people's efficiency on many aspects. We can find benefits of technology not only for the whole society but also for each individual. For example, the large-scale use of machine in temporary factories, has accelerated factory’s production rate, they could produce more commodities in each unit time. Another case in point is computer, the most distinguished invention in the 20th century. The functions of computers have greatly impact on everybody's daily live. We can take advantage of computer treating the complex and enormous data within just a few seconds which task maybe cost us one year to accomplish. Moreover, we can use computer to find out useful information and needn’t to take trouble to look up original papers which save a lot of time for researchers. Computer can help us achieve what we want as quickly as possible and finally increase people's efficiency.

However, is it a truth that people have more leisure time under the situation of the widely utilization of machine and computers technology? Let us see a recent data reported by a local newspaper. According to the report, people's average leisure time was 12-14 hours per day during the 1980-1990. And the average working hours was 10-12 hours each day. Whereas ten years later, though technology make a great progress during this ten years, the average leisure time have experienced a sharply decrease to 6-8 hours a day while other busying time have occupied the last time of each person. This data obviously tell us that people seem much busier than the old days, and don’t have enough time for entertainment and other private activities.

When we get down to the fundamental reasons of this phenomenon, I think there are several causes that can explain. Firstly, with the development of technology, it is inevitably bring much more information to each person, and require a higher level of knowledge standard. If one trying to keep up with the peace of every-minute changed society, he/she must learn as more as he/she can. For example, when a factory changes the old machine for some new and superior ones, workers must learn how to operate this new machine if he/she wants to continue working in the factory and only via this choice can he/she won’t lose job. So it is conspicuous that learning new technique will take up work’s time and they have no choice but sacrifice their leisure time. Second, although technology will save time for people and give advance to efficiency, it is common sense that when people finish one task they will arrange for another in order to gain as much profit as possible. Consequently they finally find themselves tired and have less leisure time than their predecessors.

In sum, technology, in fact, just like other things in the world, is a two-edged sword. When we savouring the benefits they give us, we should also considering the side effects. So I would rather conclude that technology increase people's efficiency while, unfortunately on the contrary, people don't have more leisure time.
