51"Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
Whether truly effective education results from specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student? Faced with this controversial issue, we might find out that different people hold their own ideas depending on personal experiences, conflicting values and actual observations of life. In my point of view, however, I am inclined to support the idea that when education is specifically designed to satisfy the individual needs and interests, it is truly effective. In the following discussion, I would like to present several aspects to support my standpoint.
To begin with, one of the goals of education is to foster kinds of generations in any area for out society, so we should focus our attention upon students’ interests and needs. Without interests and needs, that is to say, we will lose some potential power to do everything. We might all have similar experience that doing something is very productive with our personal interests and needs, and that we do not like do the thing we have no interests on. A typical example, Beethoven, one of the greatest composers and musicians in the world, created many famous symphonies. Astonishingly, he produced his most famous symphony with complete deafness. How could he manage that? It must be the prominent interest to music that stimulates him to struggle and thrive, thus he can even feel the beauty of music in spite of no hearing at all. In some aspects, interests could create one’s imagination and potential we are not aware before. Surprisingly, sometime, the interest can generate the super- power that you never think of such strong power to finish the interesting thing.
Furthermore, another goal of education is to obtain the knowledge. As we discussed above, with interests, one can obtain the knowledge effectively. However, schools and universities have responsibilities to bring up students’ interests and needs in that they might too young to clearly understand their own true interests and demands. Some youth may have wrong interests and needs, in that case, schools and universities must guide students to have right values and morality before interests and needs. One’s interests might influence one’s lifelong career, majority of people be successful in their work due to their enthusiasm in that area. People stick to something for a long time and make some achievement only when they have their own true interests on that kind of stuff. Therefore, if the education is designed to meet the individual interests and needs, the prospective of education will be excellent.
Admittedly, encouraging students to hold their own interests and needs do not mean schools and universities must educate according to each person’s interest and need. It is not practical to perform, complicated and cost higher compared to the education with only the same model and system. Teachers are not enough to teach students who have a lot of different interests and needs. Too much emphasis on interests and needs leads to the confusion of the education. For example, some students heat studying mathematics, but should we eliminate that subject in our education? Of course not, because it is the basic subject of other courses.
In sum, it is very likely that people will never be able to arrive at the same conclusion on this controversial issue due to there different experience, conflicting values and actual observations of life. However, taking into account all the dimensions of the issue discussed in the above analysis, there is little doubt that more and more people will come to realize that only when education is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests, it is truly effective.

In this memo, the chairperson of the school board in the town of Saluda recommends hiring Mr Schade, the music director at Steel City for the past five years, to plan and direct the general music education programs for the entire Saluda school system. To support this recommendation the chairperson points out that the school band from Steel City High has won three regional band competitions during the time when Mr. Charles Schade has been the music director. Meanwhile the chairperson also points out that the quality of the music rehearsal facilities and musical instrument at Steel City High has improved markedly over the past five years during to Mr. Charles Schade’s performance. This recommendation is problematic for several reasons.
The major problem with this recommendation is that the chairperson fails to establish the casual relationship between Mr. Charles Schade’s performance and three regional band competitions. Lacking evidence to confirm this assumption, it is possible that the successes of the regional band competition are from other factors. Because there are many factors influence the band’s performance to win the regional band competitions, such as the other members of the band and the performance of the other bands that engaged the competitions. Without considering and ruling out other possible reasons why the band wan the awards the chairperson cannot convince us that the band’s achievement because of the music director.
Another flaw that weakens this recommendation is that the chairperson unfairly assumes that the action that the quality of the music rehearsal facilities and musical instruments at Steel City High has improved markedly over the past five years results from Mr. Schade’s efforts. The memo has no evidence to confirm this assumption, perhaps the improvement of the music facilities and musical instrument attributes the other administrations in the school. Just from the chairperson’s over simple claim, it is unreasonable to convince us to accept the hasty conclusion.
In addition, analogies draw between Steel City High and Saluda school board are highly suspect, it is possible that there are many serious differences. The chairperson fails to consider that Mr. Schade is also good for Saluda school because of his successes at Steel City High. But the chairperson do not consider other individuals, perhaps they are more suitable for Saluda school. Furthermore, it is equally possible that the two schools have different situations.
To sum up, the recommendation lacks credibility because the evidence cited in the analysis does not lend strong support to what the arguer maintains. To strengthen the argument, the chairperson would have to provide more evidence concerning the performance Mr. Schade act and the successes he brought. To better evaluate the argument, we would need more information about the relationship between the two schools.
