argument 9
The following appeared in a memorandum from a dean at Omega University.
"Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by thirty percent. Potential employers apparently believe the grades at Omega are inflated; this would explain why Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should now terminate student evaluation of professors."
In this argument, the dean of Omega concludes that Omega university should terminate student evaluation of professors to grantee its graduates to acquire better jobs. In order to support this conlusion, the dean cites that since the university implanted a new procedure to evaluate the teching effective of all their professors, over all students grade average increased by thirty percent which resulted in the potential employers believed that the grades of students are inflated, and also directly caused Omega graduates have not been successful at getting jobs than the graduated students from Alpha University. This argument rests on a series of unsubstantiated assumptions, and is therefore unpersuasive as it stands.
First of all,the dean unfairly assumes that average grade increased which was result of the evaluation procedure is inflated. The purpose of implement this evaluation procedure is that make the professors improve the teaching skills to help the students master the knowledge thoroughly and finally not only do enhance the capability of students, but also improve the average grade of students.Obviously,it is possible that with implement this evaluation procedure, all professors spent more and more times concentrated on improving teaching skills and help students with study. No doubt the average grade incread.
In addition, the dean provides no evidence that Omega graduates have not been successful at getting jobs than the students from Alpha university attributes to the evaluation procedure. The capability and quality of a student or curriculum the students learn play a role for students to get a job.Perhaps Alpha university provide students with very practical curriculums which are effective and helpful for students to acquire jobs.Furthermore, the dean provide nothing about Alpha university, perhaps Alpha university is famous and have a good reputation among the country,so the graduates from it are versatile and high qualified. However Omega university is just a common university and not so renowed. In short, without providing other factors that may contribute to Omega students less successful of getting jobs than Alpha students.
Finally, the dean asserts that terminate the evaluation procedure will help students get better jobs is unwarranted. .It is well known that acquiring a job is not merely depends on the grades who achieved.Even the students grade in Omega University believed inflated, perhaps most of the reasons are its curriculum are not practical which caused the students hard to get job.Without providing any evidence that terminate the evaluation procedure will help the students to acquire better job,it is unreasonable to stop the evaluation procedure.
In sum,the argument is not well reasoning and lacks incredibility. To make the argument more convicing, the dean need to prove that the average grade increased contributes to the evaluation procedure, and the evaluation procedure impeded the students to get better jobs. Finally the dean need to make a comparison in different factors between students in Omega university and Alpha university, especially the curriculums and quality of students. |
