38 In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books.

With the development of electrical technology in the late of 1980’s, television as the represent of great electrical products, has quickly tied up the market and meanwhile come into customers’ houses as the necessary equipment. According to this trend, it is likely that speaker’s claim that television is playing more important role than books makes some sense. Nevertheless, from my point of view, although television is a king in the field of apparatus at present, it doesn’t mean that it could take place of books.

Admittedly, television itself covers resourceful information, including news, interviews, films, serials, live programs and on. To some extent, television is a collection of all different kinds of knowledge, from advertisement to big events on earth. As far as I am concerned, the information on television embraces five sorts of information. At first, it tells daily news in the state or outside the state, such like CCTV. news; at second, it introduces a myriad of scientific common sense or interesting tips in the life, such as kitchen teaching and travel tips; thirdly, it offers an entertain space at home, such like serials about love stories or cartoon for children; fourthly, it gathers public benefits or wishes, reveals some dark side in society, supervises the governments, such as interview programs; finally, it holds kinds of classes on the educational channel. Therefore, we have to admit this fact that television has been become part of human being’s life and persons would be new illiterate in modern times without television.

On the other hand, with the growing of television, there is no decrease or disappearance of books in the market. Books had existed when human could write and register. In the past thousands of years, books were the main and reliable tools to receive knowledge, express individual feelings and show their creative respect. No matter they are a novel, report, chronicle, or other sort of forms, people couldn’t put down books. It is said that book ( knowledge ) is power. Books could be brought by people when they leave for one place and reading could happen everywhere, even on buses or toilets. Meanwhile, they could select any kind of books to read and understand from numerous books on the market which refer to every field.

Taking account into all factors above, television and books both have their own advantages and disadvantages. At first, they have some common aspects. Television and books similarly cover broad fields in society. Sometimes, it is the book that embraces more fields than does the television, for television has limited channels and playing time and often lacks several unimportant aspects, such as overdue things. Secondly, television owns some merits that books don’t have. TV set shows the latest things in the shortest time .Colorful and lively moving picture which helps people readily understand the complex things is the most attractive point. At the same time, books have the advantages television doesn’t own. Book’s small size causes a set of moving television which could be hold to everywhere. In fact, most people still prefer reading books quietly in the couch under the sunshine. This is a perfect feeling with fragrance in the books.  

To sum up, no matter how advanced television is in the future, books are impossibly replaced by television or computer, because reading books is not only a way of learning, but also a good habit in people’s life. While watching TV, we shouldn’t forget to become a worm in the books at the same time and enjoy the fragrance books spurt out.
