------题目------
The following memo appeared in the newsletter of the West Meria Public Health Council.
'An innovative treatment has come to our attention that promises to significantly reduce absenteeism in our schools and workplaces. A study reports that in nearby East Meria, where fish consumption is very high, people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the treatment of colds. Clearly, eating a substantial amount of fish can prevent colds. Since colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work, we recommend the daily use of Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, as a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism.'
------正文------
The memo recommends that the daily use of Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, is a good way to prevent colds and lower the absenteeism in schools and workplaces. To support this conclusion, the memo demonstrates the state of East Maria and the fact that colds are the most frequently used reason for absences. Unfortunately, neither the former nor the latter can powerfully back up the recommendation.
First of all, it is unverified to claim that the high consumption of fish prevent colds. According to the study mentioned in the memo, residents in East Meria, where fish consumption is high, visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the treatment of colds. However, other relevant factors have not been carefully examined, such as the economic status of this area, the everyday diet of ordinary people, and other living habits of residents there. For example, if the economic status is rather poor in East Meria, even if people experience colds fairly frequently, they do not have enough money to see doctors each time. Besides, even if the residents there go to clinics less frequently by virtue of their perfect health, the perfect health can be induced by other food in their daily diet, or good daily exercises. Therefore, without the main causes of the low clinic attendance, the memo cannot conclude that the consumption of fish can prevent colds.
Even if eating fish can protect people from colds, it is unsubstantiated to assert that receiving Ichthaid can achieve such effects. Assume that fish consumption can actually prevent colds. It is necessary to study which part of fish induces such effects rather that arbitrarily deduce all parts of fish, even a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, can protect people from colds as well. No information demonstrates that Ichthaid can help prevent colds.
Even if the using of Ichthaid can prevent people from colds, it is unreasonable to expect the declination of absence excuses. Although colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work, no additional evidence indicates that all people give such absence excuses do really catch colds. Perhaps they just give such excuses, but in fact go to do other things, because cold excuses are easily to be accepted by schools and work places. If most people who use cold excuses do not actually experience such problems, the improvement of cold prevention will not induce significant changes at all.
In conclusion, the recommendation stated by the memo is not convincing enough to be accepted by ordinary people. Since neither the effects of using Ichthaid nor the credibility of cold excuses has been carefully examined, it is unwise to announce that the consumption of such a kind of nutritional supplement can reduce absenteeism in schools and working places. |
