历史类:
48. "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant  events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of  people whose identities have long been forgotten." (102)
历史研究过于关注个人。历史上最有意义的事件和潮流能够成为可能不是因为几个少数的名人而是一些身份早就被淡忘的人群。

提纲:
1.event and trend的确不只一些名人,other people也是有份的

Whether were the most significant events and trends in history made possible by the famous few, or by groups of people? Although it is true that any historical event unavoidably involves many people rather than only famous ones, I do believe that the famous people play more irreplaceable role in historical events because celebrity usually put decisive influence on the initiation and development of any event.

It is indisputable that historical events, in most cases, involves a number of people from different social class rather than merely a few elites. Any seminal revolution, such as overthrowing an old government, inevitably concern with groups of people, including not only the initiators and leaders who are remembered by descendants but also the soldier, spy, reporter and even the farmers who provide food for every member of the society. Without the cooperation of these ordinary people, the revolution cannot achieve success. Consequently, as a history researcher, only master the background and deed of famous few is not sufficient so as to objectively and balanced understand a profound historical event or a society.

Conceding that besides famous few, lots of other people also contribute to historical events, I think that elite and famous people are more irreplaceable when it comes to significant events and trend in history. In the first place, famous people decisively make the events possible. Why? My argument involves the nature of those so-called “famous few”. Actually, lot of them previously are also merely an ordinary social member, until someday they initiate the event or contribute to the formation of a trend and it is entirely possible that later on they become key leaders of a group of people which conforms to their belief. As a general rule, those famous people’s wisdom and efforts always provide indispensable impetus for progress of the event or trend and hence they are usually the most indispensable figures in historical events. As a result, the thought, life, story of them greatly guide researchers to accurately and efficiently recognize the cause and process of any event.

Consider, for example, the field of art. When it comes to impression, even a layman of art also might know Monut and Picasso who are two of creators of impression. Admittedly, creating a new style requires numerous artists’ effort and persistence. Nevertheless, as two permanent representatives who initiate formation of the brand new style and greatly promote the development of it, Monut and Picasso became the most famous artists of impression and their paints are always considered as the premium educational documents to guide students recognize impression. Another telling example is the field of academia. In the history of academia, sages created a lot of brilliant theories, but it does not mean that they completed the whole process, including calculating, analyzing statistics, and examining all by themselves. Actually, any academic breakthrough and big achievement require the diligent research of co-workers or their students. However, for public, the one who first brought the elite of the theory to the world is the one we remembered.

However, while we clearly understand the significance of famous people toward big events and trend in history, we should also avoid to overemphasize on those people so that neglect the multi-quality of an event. After all, any person is inevitably limited by own experience and his or her thought is necessarily influenced by family, class and identity. It is temping to imagine that if historicists merely pay attention on a famous people who is a noble and also a leader of an event which consists of people from different class, they easily tend to be one-hand on the event and consequently commit the failure of oversimplification.

In conclusion, without famous people, some significant event is entirely possible postponed forever, without certain groups of people and the society, the event which belongs to the development of human society might not progress smoothly or successfully. As a result, to efficiently and accurately recognize the cause and process of any event and trend, researchers should focus on famous few and to gain a more balanced information, researchers should also pay attention on other people.
