------题目------
The only responsibility of corporate executives, provided they stay within the law, is to make as much money as possible for their companies.
------提纲------
1、确实应该追求利益。对消费者还有社会都有好处。
2、其实法律也未必健全,不能为了盈利钻法律漏洞,侵害消费者利益。
3、还应该承担社会责任。(可持续发展、教育)
------正文------
Should the only responsibility of corporate executives be to maximize profit for their companies, within the bound of the law? I concede that as the main role of a company, an executive should take the responsibility to make profit. However, as far as I am concerned, besides own financial responsibility, every executive should also conform to morality and take the social responsibility.
Admittedly, the speaker is on the right philosophical side of the issue. As a profit-oriented institution, a company would indisputably consider making profit as the main goal and seeking to make profit within the law also benefits the consumers and the society. At the personal level, in our highly competitive society, to attract consumers and then maximize profit, companies usually take a series of promoting action, such as better service, higher-quality production, lower price and so on, all of which would definitely benefit consumers. At the social level, without the "profit attraction", the economic development of our whole society would be greatly impeded. After all, it is the pursuit of making profit that stimulates companies to create more useful commodities and hence enrich the market. Moreover, without considerable profit, companies would fail to be the significant tax-payer. To sum up, as a corporate executive, one should take affirmative measures to make as much money as possible for their companies, within the bound of the law.
Conceding the merit of the speaker's assertion, this claim is also problematical in at least two respects. My first argument involves the inherent shortcoming of legislation. Law is always revised, complemented and perfected with the development of human society. This perfecting process clearly reveals that law, no matter in any nation, is not completely integrate and flawless. Realizing the feature of law, query whether any people can jeopardize our society for personal profit, so long as he/she does not break the law. One telling example has to do with the e-commerce that means buying and selling commodities through Internet. In China, because of lacking relative regulations, the right of consumers cannot be efficiently protected and thus some companies provide consumers with low-quality productions or deceive consumers with other methods. This phenomenon reveals that although some companies do not break any law, they also jeopardize the benefit of consumers for the pursuit of profit. Consequently, when executives seek profit, they should not only conform to the law and regulation, but also should conform to morality.
In additional, in my points of view, every company should take social responsibility. A corporate executive who has decisive influence on the goal of a company should consider the question-whether his/her commercial behavior would have positive or negative impact on the society in several aspects, such as environment, lasting development and even education. Considering, for example, the lasting development. In present day, many big companies waste considerable electric power in transportation and production. Although using electricity is not illegal behavior, the chief official executives should take affirmative measures to avoid over-wasting because electricity is a limited resource belonging to the whole world. In the term of education, to impress viewers, many advertisements retort to violence and sex appealing that would put potential threat to children.
In conclusion, I believe that as the member of the society, any corporate executive should not only conform to morality, but also should recognize and take their social responsibility other than make profit for their companies. |
