issue38 In this age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books.

In advocating that reading plays an insignificant role in the learning process during the era of popularity of television, the speaker overlooks certain specific and abstract notions only hold by texts. Nevertheless, I fundamentally support the statement to the extent that exclusive reliance on books would be inefficient and ineffective, especially considering the obscurity involved.

Experience tells us that individuals tend to comprehend laws and ideas, some of which are difficult to directly imagine, through the procedures demonstrated in pictures. Discovery Channel efficiently conveys engraved solutions to those obscurities by the means of illustrating and revealing both the detailed processes of changes and obvious phenomena of conversions. With such visual and vivid pictures, not only the text, each individual can surely learn widely and deeply other than a single formula. Similarly, watching the program of National Geography, one could not only be greatly attracted by the gorgeous scene and marvelous sight, but also easily understand how and why this complex and complicated landscape formed. Thus, individual would efficiently learn much, or even more, knowledge through television rather than read books only.

In addition, television serves as a significant transmitter which well introduces the colorful world and various customs. Individual can simply press the button to change channels in which the Carnival Day in Brazil or the International Folklore Festival in Bulgaria would be shown. What is not indispensable is that individual uses up a great effort to collect and select amount of information kept in sum of books in a large library. And as a matter of fact, mostly, individuals acquire knowledge derived from various cultures through television, and, as well, the majorities are likely to do so since it is convenient and valid to learn ideas and custom. Therefore, without a cost of extensive time spending on finding and reading materials, watching corresponding TV programs would be a better choice to familiar with the outside world.

Admittedly, assimilating information through the TV, individual absorbs the knowledge somewhat passively, and he may have hardship in grasp the core ideas of some abstract problems. Insofar as philosopher concerned, most problems cannot be delivered completely and accurately on the TV screen. Individuals need a capacious room to consider those specific notions actively. Also, it is true that books, regarded as a carrier of knowledge for thousands of years, are convenient to take nearly everywhere for reading, and are transforming itself successfully to adapt the reader's requirement. However, television program alters as well. And much more knowledge, such as the video-formed lectures of MIT, the MBA courses in Yale, speeches in Stanford, can be display racially on screen, which the books cannot actualize. Accordingly, individuals can gain notably ideas and information by watching and viewing the TV programs and courses.

In sum, television provides a broad, photographic and attractive way so as to proficiently learning from the complex and complicated knowledge, whereas the books sometimes deliver a radiate room in which we excogitate kinds of philosophical questions.
