121 Some people trust their first impressions about a person's character because they believe these judgments are generally correct. Other people do not judge a person's character quickly because they believe first impressions are often wrong. Compare these two attitudes. Which attitude do you agree with? Support your choice with specific examples.
----------------------
Since hundreds years ago, people have always been bewildered whether they should trust their judgments toward someone else by his/her first appearance, and whether their first impressions upon others are always credible. Admittedly, I am one of those persons, but, generally I prefer to estimate someone’s character through a long-term touch.
Firstly, there is a comparative amount of population in the world, who are deliberate to, or compelled to, conceal themselves behind their masks. Even though we hate to believe that we are surrounded by lies, adulations, and deceits, we have to accede that is the realistic life of every body. For instance, if someone sophisticated wants to access to you, he/she will concentrate to leave you a fascinating impression by many paths such as carefully making-up, decent dressing, and amicable utterance, and all of those will disturb one’s judgment, if based on his/her first sight. In addition, taken as another striking example, the advanced cosmetic surgery has shown its magic of transfiguration for populace, and largely challenged people’s faith that “seeing is believing”.
Secondly, man’s capabilities of discrimination and judgment depend on his refinements of knowledge, experience and sagacity. As not every one possesses all those elements, it is too harsh for them to be confident of what they saw or heard at the first time. On the other hand, with relatively developed science and technology, the world is changing every minute in a rapid speed, so even for a sage, his mind should be updated timely to catch the paces of the world, let lone the common people like me.
Albeit the first impression is not as believable as a long-term observation, there are some exceptions. For example, a specialized detective should trust his penetrating judgment, even his intuition, according to the first expression, in case he would overlook some essential clue or inkling, especially in emergency.
To sum up, for some particular persons or under some emergent situations, the first sight is convincing, but normally, we should behave as the aphorism tells us to do that “you can not judge a book from its cover”, and actually that is my philosophy.
