tomas007的修改,不好意思,迟到了
161. "In this age of intensive media coverage, it is no longer possible for a society to regard any woman or man as a hero. The reputation of anyone who is subjected to media scrutiny will eventually be diminished."
3) We cannot neglect the fact that absolute objectivity never exists since any media is under the control of the government, or other organization, particularly in those less democratic countries, where the politics usually use the media as the tool to propagate what the authority prefer.
As the influence of the massive media on our social life becomes increasingly profound, the media has the power to either create a hero or put an end to a heroic image. So I fundamentally disagree with the speaker's claim that the intensive scrutiny coverage will ruin the reputation of anyone.
To begin with, it is true that massive media has provided us with more chance to understand a public figure than ever before. In order to catch more attention of audience, the media should present more exclusive news. One way is to investigate the life of the public figures, especially those regarded as heroes. Sometimes the investigators assigned by the media will have unexpected discoveries about the figures. And if, unfortunately, the discoveries turn out to discredit the public figures' images, then we can expect the termination of their reputation. For example, Nixson (Nixon), the leading role of the Watergate Scandal, become the first president to resign in the history of the United States. And it was the press media that brought the improper acts of Watergate to public attention, thus thwarting the attempted cover-up and prompting or giving impetus to official investigation. Obviously, the media was one of the most important contributors to the end of Nixon's heroic image.
Secondly, at the same time, there indeed exist some real heroes being able to stand up to the intense scrutiny of the massive media. They have excellent characters; they are charitable; they have dedicated themselves to some noble causes. Besides, they haven't committed any fatal fault that plays the key role in damage one's fame. In this occasion, no matter how careful the massive media will exam their life, no matter how strong the reports' desire to dig out some unexpected stories, they will still stand as heroes and receive wide acknowledgement from the public. A telling example is Peck Gregory, American motion-picture actor, whose portrays are typically characterized by dignity and integrity. He earned respect and reputation from both inside and outside his circles for his everlasting dedication to the development of motion-picture and to propagation of justice. And in spite of the exact examination by the massive media, he remained as a hero even after his death in 2003.
Finally, we can not neglect the fact that absolute objectivity never exists since any media is under the control of the government or other organization, particularly in those less democratic countries, where the politics usually use the media as the tool to propagate what they prefer and proscribe what they do not. Thus in these countries, we cannot just depend on the media to decide who is hero and who is not. For instance, to ensure the public that their acts will be noble if they follow some principles set by the politics, the government is likely to exaggerate a normal people into a hero by virtue of propagating his deeds though massive media. Meanwhile, some real heroes remain unknown because of the media's refusal to publicize them for the stability of the authority. Thus, as the media cannot be totally independent from other forces, we cannot be convinced that the hero appearing in the screen or in the headline has not been fabricated.
To sum up, we can come to the conclusion that media, however advanced it may be, cannot escape its own nature of subjective reflection of the real world. There are too much factors, some of which are listed in the foregoing statement, to affect it to treat a man or woman as a hero or not.
从第一段说more chance to understand a public figure到第二段有hero能stand up to the intense scrutiny of the massive media,及第三段的under the control of the government or other organization,递进关系相当明显,非常好。但是它们并没有很好地呼应主题句either create a hero or put an end to a heroic image。 |
