Does high-speed electronic communications media tend to prevent meaningful and thoughtful communication? Here, the speaker claims that it dose. However, what kind of communication that we regard as thoughtful and meaningful is hard to define, thus, there is no certain answer for this question.

On the one hand, along with the rapid development in communications media, we can reach others whenever and wherever. When we enter into 20 century, our society was driven to a new period called as information era, telegraph, television, satellite mobile, especially Internet, all of them change the way we communicate with one another that we did in past. It will not come as a surprise that students in the rural areas of a country can keep abreast the information era, through receiving TV educational programs and multi-media information in order to launch long-distant education. What is more, teacher can use multi-media technologies to educate students, making class more interesting. Advances in communication technologies dramatically change the way people work, the CEO of a company can hold a meeting with his staff to discuss issues through telephone, even television conversation, no matter he is at his home, or on vocation in a pacific island, drinking a bottle of beer. In this sense, high-speed electronic communication actually enhances the meaning and thought of communication, rather than reduce them.

On the other hand, people spend more and more time in high-speed electronic communication, while spending less time talking with each other face to face. Although nowadays, people in growing number, including the speaker, have been beginning to realize that televisions and computers steal our time and attention from our families, communities, and co-workers. However, many people have already relied on the modern communication too much, and cannot get rid of them; even they have already recognized the disadvantages of modern communication clearly. No one would argue serious that a conversation between parents and their children can be substituted by any other ways of communication such as telephone, letter, let alone E-mail. Such conversation can not only enhance the relation between parents and their children but also let the children feel the love from their parents, which cannot rely on any advanced technological methods to express. In fact, it is more than a conversation, involving gentle voice, eyes contact, and care, all of them can used to express sentiment of human beings, either from parents or from children. From this sense, the modern communication is reducing rather than increasing the meaning and thought embodying in communication.

Finally, no matter how advanced and futuristic a communication technology is, it is dominated by it inventor-man. Face to face conversation, telephone, E-mail, television program, and so much are only the way of communication, they can not contact with each other unless used by man. Consider both high-speed electronic communications and traditional one has their own advantages and disadvantages, we should depend on occasion to choose one of them to utilize, sometimes even both of them. In a company, the boss either can choose to use E-mail to order his managers to fulfill a business, if the case is urgent, or he also can choose an interview with his staff, discussing over a new market plan, an interview enabling to encourage his staff by showing his concerns.

In sum, to make our lives better, we are striving to improve the science and technology, although sometimes some unexpected consequences come along as well. Likewise, modern communication technologies have already been exerting drastic effects in our daily life, and this trend seems to continue showing no sigh of declining. We should learn how to use them, making our communication meaningful and thoughtful, as traditional communication does in today and tomorrow.
