TOPIC: ARGUMENT220 - The following appeared in an article in a magazine for writers.
"A recent study showed that in describing a typical day's conversation, people make an average of 23 references to watching television and only 1 reference to reading fiction. This result suggests that, compared with the television industry, the publishing and bookselling industries are likely to decline in profitability. Therefore, people who wish to have careers as writers should acquire training and experience in writing for television rather than for print media."

The arguer gives the suggestion that writers need to practise for the television writing exercise rather than write print media only more because the print media will be no longer popular. Both the evidence and the conclusion in the argument are doubtable.
The study in the above argument is not scientific and reasonable. First of all, the objects of comparing are improper. The print media contains poem, essay, scribble, fairy tale, biography, critics, also contains fiction. There is a proverb in China "We cannot depict a tree by only one leaf". It means the arguer is unwise to make the discussion between writing for television and print media using the result of the compare by television writing and fiction. On the other hand, the result of the study also cannot conflict that the writing for television has more value than normal writing. More oral words and sentences usually occur in television programs while these languages are not suitable to write on books just like the words in the program of "Friends" and "Hip-Hop".
Besides, the arguer gives no evidence to show the decline of bookselling industry and the raise of television industry. Do the books not sell out as more as past in the last year? Do the readers complain no good authors? Do the profits of book stores amazingly decline? No information about the worse book-selling situation is given out by the arguer. At the same time, we also not have evidence about the television industry is better than before. A television program spends so many costs and labors. Even if its total profit more than a book, the average profit of each one may be not so many as authors of normal books. Furthermore, with worse competition in the television industry, many channels are facing bankrupt now, how could the arguer advice new authors to jumping into this fire pot.
Another reason of the authors not changing the careers is that most of them are writing for their interesting not for money. Especially to the younger authors, they have imagines for future honor and success, they learn from the best authors in the history such as …, they write for poor, they want to use their ability to make true arts. So that, no matter how many money can be gotten by writing for some television programs which are full of economic character, these authors will never move their pens to write such works.
