I agree with the speaker insofar as a global university should be founded which designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's social problems with the nations' help. However, we must note that under current circumstance, it is hard to realize in that each nation has its own interest, and it is different to harmonize them.
In an era of globalization, although technology makes the world smaller and smaller, and the contract between nations are nearer and nearer, more and more global problems come into people's lives and puzzle human. From global environmental pollution to global energy crisis; from counter-terrorism to counter-contagion; all of these problems are in front of people, and not easy to solve because they are worldwide, whose solution needs the cooperation between nations. The fact is that many nations recognize the necessary of incorporation between them, and have founded many worldwide or area wide orgnizations. WTO, for example, founded for solving economic conflicts between nations, play a more and more pole in the world.
Nations also establish some organizations studying the global problems in their country; however, it has developed slowly, as a recent study showed in USA, which also reveals that nations do not do enough in this aspect. So, it is necessary to found more global organizations like a global university helping to solve this problem. If the university is founded, many resources of nations can be moved together and used, researchers, for example, and each nation can take out money to establish the equipments together which one nation can hardly afford, and a mass of repeated building of equipments can be averted. Moreover, the problems happened in different nations can be freely shared and analyzed to better access the cause. Without a global university, of course, nations can obtain all this benefits by other means, but it cannot be as effective as a global university which is expert in the research.
However, a global university is not easy to found today. The nations must and have to consider its own interests before it take any measure, and since the conflict between nations is so hard to eliminate, the foundation of a global university is different to realize. It needs more consistence and understanding than other organizations which nations is lack of because the university cannot lead to the benefit immediately as other economic organizations and therefore little has been done in this aspect nowadays, which make the condition even worse. One leader in country B may say that: “The problem is more sever in country A, so A must take out more money and responsibility of the foundation of university.” And A will say that the problem is global and everyone should share the responsibility equally. B may want the university to research problem C firstly which affect itself severely but B would not agree with that in that it thinks D should be researched firstly. These problems are also hard to face with. So, in order to found the university, a special worldwide organization should be founded before that, dealing with the conflicts between nations in this aspect. It also has to be warranted that the organization has absolute powers to ensure every nation obey to it, which is hard to realize which is hard to satisfy.
In sum, the foundation of a global university is benefit to solving the current world's social problem. However, it is hard to be founded because it cannot bring any direct benefit and therefore the nations are hard to have enough impetus to found it. As a result, before the foundation, a global organization should be found in order to conciliate the conflict between nations. |
