LSE named 'best university in London' and third overall in the UK

LSE has been named the top university in London by The Sunday Times University Guide 2006. The 64-page guide was published with The Sunday Times on 10 September 2006.

The guide says: 'The London School of Economics and Political Science takes over from Imperial College London as the top institution in the capital. It is the first time it has finished top since 2003.'

The School is also ranked third in the UK overall, swapping places with Imperial College who appear this year in fourth place.

'Occupying a compact central London site, LSE is about to double the size of its teaching space by redeveloping 14,352 sq ft of a former government building between Kingsway and Lincoln's Inn Fields. With more than 12 applications per place, the LSE attracts some of the best qualified students in this country and from around the world. More than half the intake is from abroad, attracted by the LSE’s pre-eminence in the study of social sciences.

'Academics from across Britain, ranked the LSE third overall for providing high quality undergraduate courses, the best result in the capital. It was ranked fifth overall (third in the capital) for undergraduate provision by head teachers.'

Jimmy Tam, LSE Students' Union general secretary, said: 'We are delighted to see that our hard-working and active student body is getting the recognition it deserves.'

LSE Director Howard Davies said: 'It's a pleasing result for us. I hope Richard Sykes of Imperial will still speak to me.'

In other rankings, LSE is rated top of the UK institutions and second in the world, behind Harvard, for social sciences, by the Times Higher Educational Supplement (THES).
