TOPIC: ARGUMENT71 - Copper occurs in nature mixed with other minerals and valuable metals in ore, and the proportion of copper in the ore can vary considerably. Until fairly recently, the only way to extract pure copper from ore was by using a process that requires large amounts of electric energy, especially if the proportion of copper in the ore is low. New copper-extracting technologies can use up to 40 percent less electricity than the older method to process the same amount of raw ore, especially when the proportion of copper in the ore is high. Therefore, we can expect the amount of electricity used by the copper-extraction industry to decline significantly.

In this argument, the author concludes that the amount of electricity used by the copper-extraction industry is about to diminish significantly. To support this conclusion, the author cites that the only way to extract pure copper from ore was by using a process that requires large amounts of electric energy. The author also cites that the new technologies need 40 percent less electricity than the older method to deal with the same amount of raw ore. Closed scrutiny this argument reveals that it logically unconvicing as it stands.

To begin with, the author falesly denpends on the assumption that the new technologies need less electricity than older ones. The fact that New copper-extracing technologies can use up to 40 percent less electricity than the older method to process the same amount of raw ore, especially when the proportion of copper in the ore is high does not indicates that the electricity can less needed by adopting new methods. It may possible that when the proportion of copper in the ore is low, the new methods need more electricity to extract copper from ores. It may also possible that using the same amount of electricity, the new technologies extract less amount of copper compare to the older method.

Next, even if the new technologies are indeed can save more electricity than the older technologies, I cannot be conviced that the amount of electricity used by the copper-extraction industry to decline significantly for the author fails to prove that the new technologies can be used prevalently.  Perhaps the new method will cause environment problems like air pollution, water pollution,a lot of noises, which annoys the local environment department. Or perhaps it needs more money to build factories, purchase new facilities, employ relevant technicists, and so forth for adopting the new technologies, which is not economical and affordable. Besides, it may possible that the use of new technologies which are so difficult to learn that few people can handle them is limited in small areas.

Fianally, the effectiveness of the new technologies of saving electricity cannot indicates that the amount of electricity used by the copper-extraction industry is about to diminish significantly. It may possible that the factory which adopt the new method use more electricity in producing in oreder to get more copper.,taking no consideration of saving electricity.

To sum up, the argument is weak. To better assess it, I would need to know(1) wether the new technologies would extract more copper from raw ore than older method when use the same amount of electricity.(2)whether the new method can be populized(3)the people who use the new method of extracting are awre of saving
