TOPIC: ARGUMENT71 - Copper occurs in nature mixed with other minerals and valuable metals in ore, and the proportion of copper in the ore can vary considerably. Until fairly recently, the only way to extract pure copper from ore was by using a process that requires large amounts of electric energy, especially if the proportion of copper in the ore is low. New copper-extracting technologies can use up to 40 percent less electricity than the older method to process the same amount of raw ore, especially when the proportion of copper in the ore is high. Therefore, we can expect the amount of electricity used by the copper-extraction industry to decline significantly.

In this argument, the speaker argues that by using the new copper-exacting technologies, the amount of electricity used by the copper-exaction industry are expected to decline significantly. To support the argument, the speaker cites the fact that when process the same amount of raw ore the new copper extracting technologies can use up to 40% less electricity, especially if the proportion of copper in the ore is high, than the older process which requires large amounts of electric energy. This argument is unconvincing for several reasons.
To begin with, the assumption that the new copper-extracting technologies use less electricity than the old one is open to doubt. The fact that the old way to exact the pure copper from the ore requiring a large amount of electricity ,especially when the proportion of the ore is low while the new one requires less electricity when the purity of the ore is low does not give strong substantiation to this assumption. The speaker ignores a prerequisite of this assumption that the availability of the ore containing a high proportion of copper. If it is difficult to find the ore of high purity or such ore does not exist at all, the new technologies may cost even more or at least the same amount of electricity as the old method.
In addition, the speaker fails to rule out the possibility that the copper-extracting industry might refuse to adopt the new copper-exacting technologies. On one hand, given that the new technology can save the electricity of processing the raw ore, there is no guarantee that the copper extracted by this method is of high quality that is to say the copper extracted by the new method is more pure the one processed by the old method. On the other hand, the cost of implementing the new technology has not mentioned in the argument. If the cost is too high to be borne by the factories, the technology probably could not be adopted. Finally, the adaptability of this technology should also be taken into consideration. If the new technology is too advanced that a majority of factories have no relevant technological capability to implement it, this technology have no large possibility to be carried out.
Finally, there is no evidence whatsoever to indicate that the amount of electricity cost by processing is solely responsible for the total amount of electricity used by copper-extraction industry. Factors such as the increasing demand of copper which correspondingly calls for a larger amount of product supplying can also have some bearing on the amount of electricity cost.
In sum, the argument is logically unsound. To strengthen it, the speaker must do a thorough research about this new technology to find the exact features such as the efficiency, the adaptability and the cost of implementing it and to show the advantages of the new technology when is compared with the old one. To better assess this argument, I would need more accurate numbers about the difference of electricity cost by these two methods under different raw core conditions.
