这篇是传说中比较难的一篇,求意见,最后总结没写完,已经没什么别的语言了,总结都总结在最后一个body里,结尾不想重复,望指导
TOPIC: ISSUE176 - "The function of science is to reassure; the purpose of art is to upset. Therein lies the value of each."
WORDS: 747 TIME: 1:00:00 DATE: 2006-11-21
outline:
AB: the function of science is not to reassure or to upset
C: the function of art is not .......
D: the real function of science and art
There is a controversy in fields of art and science about their function and purpose. Someone believe that the function of science is to reassure, while the purpose of art is to upset. I cannot agree this kind of opinion since both functions or purposes of science and art, in my point of view, are neither to reassure nor to upset.
Firstly, in retrospect of history of science, we can easily find that much fruition of scientific researches provide correct and useful conclusions, which make human more faithful and powerful. The invention of steam engine brought the Industry Reform that exhaustively changed the human's life. Until today, people still enjoy the benefits that Industry Reform granted us. The invention of light bulb lights up not only the darkness of night, but also the way of electricity reform. In twentieth century, with the dramatic development of science and technology, people's lives become more comfortable than ever before. We use telephone and Internet to communicate; we use cars and planes to transport. All these conveniences are provided by science. Thanks to science, we need not to bore a hole in wood for fire; we need not to hunt animals and burn to eat. In this sense, science indeed reassures us.
On the other hand, just as the old saying goes, every coin has two sides. Science upsets human in some ways at the same time. For one thing, Albert Einstein has ever said (and I paraphrase) in all seriousness that science is to upset the common sense accepted before twenty years old. In fact, most immortal scientific achievements are usually against the common sense in their time, and thus not accepted by their contemporaries. From heliocentric theory to evolution theory, from universal gravitation to time-space relativity, all these discoveries provided fear and panic to their contemporary people. Mathematics, regarded as the fundamental of science, have three crises in its history, which brought suspicion to logic and truth. That is to say, immortal fruition of science to some extent are not welcomed by their time, and even upset the accepted rules and common sense. For another, the development of science not only provides us benefits and conveniences, but also brings many horrible results and difficult problems. From Industry Reform, environmental pollution is the byproduct of the modernization. Nowadays, it is a huge problem that human have to face and resolve. Not only this, another byproducts of development of science is the high-tech wars. The new weapons took away innumerable people's lives in the two world wars, and after that more dangerous biochemical weapons have been invented to kill. It is said the nuclear would destroy the earth for seven times. That is to say, rampant science would upset the human beings and the planet.
From this angle, science reassures, and meanwhile upsets. The same thing also takes place in field of art. As we know, one pristine goal of art is to express beauty, which reassure people's mind spiritually. In the Middle Age, the paintings hanged on the walls of churches always embodied the love of God. The Sistine Madonna, with a face benign and calm, releases our spirit and redeems our soul. The famous Mona Lisa's charming smile perfectly reflected people’s pursuit to beauty. However, at the same time, some art really upset the accepted aesthetic value and make people uncomfortable. In the first few years of coming of Impressionism, most people cannot accept its way to express beauty with such combination of colors. Even worse, Salvador Dali’s work is regarded as anti-art. In literature, many people still dislike Remembrance of Things Past written by Proust, Ulysses composed by James Joes, or Crime and Punishment created by Fyodor Dostoevsky. In certain sense, it is due to that these artworks upset the beauty in people's mind which makes them not welcomed by these people.
From discussing above, both science and art reassure and upset at the same time, so what is the truly function and purpose of art and science? In my observation, art and science are just like the two sides of a coin; they cannot be separated with each other. Einstein has said (and I paraphrase) that the world can be composed by mathematical formula as well as music notes. This illustrates the relationship of science and art and the world outside. In fact, both of them have a corporate goal--to discover the truth of the world, universe and ourselves. The only difference between them is the way they develop. Science discovers the truth from objective angle. Every discovery and progress of science are based on the reasons and logic, and can be justified in experiments or observation. While the way that art involves is subjective. The artists feel about the world and express ideas in their work. Every great work of an artist embodies his/her value of beauty and contemplation about human and the world, as well as their own affection and ideals. In this sense, both science and art is to uncover the truth, neither to reassure nor to upset, and the values lies in the process of discovering.
In sum,
