题目:ARGUMENT 105 - The following appeared in a health newsletter.

"According to a recent study, people with many social ties report catching colds less often than do people with few social ties. Consequently, researchers conclude that having an active social life probably helps strengthen the immune system. The researchers note that catching a cold-one of a family of highly contagious viruses-gives the cold-sufferer temporary immunity to that virus in the future, but not to the many other related viruses. Merely being exposed to a new cold virus, however, is not enough for a person to catch a cold, since a strong immune system can successfully fight off some new viruses. Thus, in order to prevent catching a cold, people should strengthen their immune systems by becoming more active socially."

In this argument, the arguer recommends people to be more active socially in order to prevent catching a cold. Though this recommendation may be beneficial, barely based on the evidence that the arguer provides, I cannot concede with such opinion.

Becoming more active socially is ill-defined and specious which could lead to uncertainty. Does it means to participate public activitiesto expand the connection with others, or to visit public places? If become socially active means taking part in social activities, as there is no definition to illustrate to what extent the frequency of participation should be considered as active, once a month, once a week or even more. Absent clear instruction how to become active socially, the recommendation counteractively determines the acceptance by ordinary people. Further, in current world, people in different occupations, different social status experience diverse intensity of social activities. It is necessary for a politician to devote much of his time in contact with all kinds of people and attend public activities, whereas scientists in some long-term research may have little time and energy to join social activity. The recommendation of enhancing social activeness lack of universal appropriateness since this recommendation neglects the diversity of people which may result in ineffectiveness. In addition, it is commonly the personality and characteristics that determined whether a person is active in social activities. An introverted person may not intent to contact with others if unnecessary. In this sense, asking an introvert person to change his personality merely in order to reduce the possibility of catching a cold is unpersuasive. The feasibility of the recommendation is worth to evaluate.

Moreover, the recent study that cited in the health newsletter is also lack of credibility. On the one hand, the newsletter assumes that many social ties lead to the better chance to contact with cold viruses, and therefore people acquire the immunity of those viruses. However, base on the fact provided in the newsletter that catching a cold could obtain temporary immunity to the same kind of virus but not others related, the connection with cold viruses may not cause the possibility of catching a cold to decrease because the immunity of the virus is contemporary and who knows how many kinds of cold viruses in our world, It is impossible to obtain a entire immunity through our exposure to all viruses. Even though exposed to one kind of new virus could not result in catching a cold as the argument points out, what if faced with more than one kinds of virus? Who can assure us that we could hardly encounter two or more kinds of virus at the same time? Besides, common sense informs me that the viruses are rapid in variation and one kind of virus could propagate innumerable of other related ones. On the other hand, there are no credible evidence inform me that the comparative low occurrence of cold of people who have more social ties is the result of being more active socially. Perhaps the ones who have more social ties are more likely to be in higher social status and possess better living conditions which cause less instances of catching a cold. Perhaps those people are more positive and optimistic to life hence obtain a better health condition. Without taking into account those possibilities mentioned above which could be the reason of less vulnerable to catch a cold, the newsletter is unjustifiable.

In sum, the argument is not well reasoned. The arguer has to provide more reasonable facts and logical reasoning to make the conclusion more acceptable.

本人的非典型Argu, 看了imongargu的分析,很受感触,未限时写了这篇作文,自我感觉还不错,没有用一点模板。
