According to the speaker, tradition and modernization are two ultimately different notions, and that people choose one of them actually means abandoning another(the other). I concede that tradition and modernization are usually incompatible with some respects. However, it is unjustifiable for us to overlooks (overlook) the relationship between them. And, in my view, the best way in which we treat them should be to combine their advantages which might benefit us and our society as a whole (select their advantages out and combine them together on the purpose of benefiting us and our society.).
Admittedly, tradition and modernization are usually incompatible especially when it comes to the field of science and technology. The scientific history is replete with examples of the conflict between tradition and modernization. An apt illustration involves the Copernicus' heliocentric theory against the religious view that the earth is the center of the universe. Compared to the earth-centered theory Copernicus' point amounted to modernization in science. Unfortunately, this modernized action was killed by the traditional power. Another example appears much mild, which is the Einstein's relativity theory versus theNewton's classic physical theory. However, when Einstein first provided this profound theory, most people seemed unready to accept it for reason that it is so "modernized" that it surpasses the average comprehension. (我倒觉得这两个例子还可以,爱因斯坦的相对论是一个颠覆性的理论,确实震动了全世界,不是还有一本《50个教授证明爱因斯坦错了》吗?),Therefore,the speaker's claim is somewhat reasonable with respect to the science areas. However, tradition and modernization actually include a significant relationship, which should not be overlooked. That is, the very objective of modernization is based on some disadvantages involved in the tradition, either in science or some other fields. Still consider the relativity. Although the Newton's theory is considerable systematical and correct to almost every aspects of our world, from the bodies in the universe to the apples on the trees, his formulations still show certain limitation particularly when it comes to entities in very huge or small dimensions and in a very high speed. Such disadvantages in fact serve as the impetus of the emerging of the relativity. Therefore, tradition and modernization are interrelated rather than incompatible-just like the speaker's assertion.(这一端你是想表达传统和现代之间的相互促进的关系吗?)Furthermore, another reason why I fundamentally disagree with the speaker involves the fact that tradition and modernization sometimes might acquire advantages from one another. For example, Chinese treatment, an old, traditional medicine is becoming more and more popular all over the world, as the complement of the modernized medicine. Many complicated diseases might be cured by the traditional medical form while perhaps the modern technology cannot.(个人觉得这样说是不是更好:传统中医和现代医学相结合的方法治疗了很多疑难病症,这样以体现两者之间的互补,而不是单一的说中医治好了西医治不好的病,例子还是很贴切的)这段确实需要加长,分量不够足。To sum up, the speaker's claim has merits with certain respects. However, he or she overlooks the fundamental relationship between tradition and modernization. Moreover, in many cases, both of them might bolster each other.
