With the fast technological and psychological development of our society, it seems that many traditions are challenged by modernization and ostensibly they are incompatible. However, this is often not the case. Tradition and modernization are not two sides of a coin and one do(does) not need to choose between them. Since the advent of high-technology, our life style and concepts are greatly changed. Especially when the scientific and rational concepts are more and more accepted by people in modern society, we do not believe whatever our ancestors left to us and we become more rational and critical than before. Thus, some traditional customers(customs) we thought that are not scientific would be refused by modern residents. (上面这句话问题, 可能是写得太急了。)For instance, the laggard ideas that women are only suitable stay at home and do not have capacity to work as men, now are dismissed by most people. With the modernization, women are free of(beyond/exceeding可能会更清楚) the boundary of traditional, unfair and false concepts. Many brilliant female works(?workers/people)have appeared in almost every field, like business, science, medical industries, educational systems and so on. In this sense, as individual living in this modern society, we should throw (away) the false traditional life style and concepts, which would hinder (the) development of us (both ourselves and the society) and our society and choose our modern civilization ideas and wisdoms. However, the modernization does not mean that our tradition would inevitably be destroyed and vanish in modern society in every aspect. As the limitation of the knowledge of our ancestors, they may give some false conclusion or with the development of society their conclusions and life style may not be suitable for modern society. However, there are still large amount of treasure they left to us, which are still playing important roles in our daily lives. The basic virtues, like justice, prudence, were advocated early by our forefathers and they are still the useful and necessary virtues for a modern people. Traditions are often enrolled with some basic ethics and morality that would not change with the development of our society. Without them, our society would become a total chaos. The modernization of our society does not invade these fundamental traditions and some of them may even become more important than before. To get further, with the modernization, people are actually treasuring tradition than before in that we would not lose our identity and it may give us psychological comforts.
Furthermore, the modernization sometimes even may help to enhance (enhance可以去掉)people to conform to their tradition in a more ecological way with the advent of electronic mails, mobile phones and so forth. For instance, during the Christmas, people would send cards to express their wishes and concerns to their family and friends. However, with the advent of electronic mails or other telecommunications, people can accomplish this in a more environmental way. Thus, a large amount of trees which would be otherwise cut down to make these Christmas cards would be saved and continue to protect our environment. Insofar, we can enjoy our tradition better with the modernization of our society.(这段很新颖哎, 可以从这点出发,指出modernization不仅没有减弱tradition发而从某些方面加强了tradition并可以和谐共处) In sum, I do not agree the author's notion that tradition and modernization are not compatible. In fact, they are opposite to each other though with the development of society, some harmful and unscientific tradition would be ruled out people's life. Nevertheless, with the accomplishment of modernization, we can enjoy traditions our ancestors left to us better. |
