TOPIC: ISSUE38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
WORDS: 560 TIME: 0:45:00 DATE: 2006-12-23
In the age of television, I agree that we can learn much more than before and books are not as important as it was as the notion above. However, I hardy share the assertion that we can learn as much by watching as they can read books in that books have some merits, which can not be surpassed by the television.
With the advent of television, we gain many benefits from this magic invention and we learn more immediate information than before, which is more vivid and instant than we get from books. Because the television can convey information immediately that may happen thousands of mails away, we can obtain information instantly. Due to this merits, we are not bound to the restriction of space and time. For instance, people in Asian can enjoy the World Cup with people in Berlin at the same time just by turning on television and lying on the soft sofa. Besides, the information we get from the television is more vivid and thus easier to understand. It is the reason why now more and more schools in China are equipping their classrooms with television to promote the efficiency of teaching. Students now do not need to use all their imagination to figure out the construction a molecule and teachers would show them on the television.
However, when we enjoy the great pleasure and convenience brought by the television, we should realize that in the term of learning, television is not the most important tool because of the fast speed of image it conveys, which is not convenient to review and leave little time us to assimilate the huge amount information. The information we get by watching television are often broadcasted only once. Thus we do not have many chances to review and we hardly have time to reconsider what we get. This hinders us to think deeply and we just get information from watching it but not learn and assimilate. In this sense, television is a great tool to get information but not a perfect way to learn.
Besides, we should not ignore the fact that books cannot be surpassed by television since they are more systematic than television. Books are often written down after the author careful and comprehensive consideration and thought. Books are the concentration of our ancestors' wisdoms and creations and thus they are more systematic than television. We can learn the beautiful and logical analysis of our nature principles, like philosophy, literature and physics. Though the television can make the imagination of the directors or actors visualize, the imagination and sense of emotion we get by reading classics, like Odysseys, cannot be expressed by the television.
Furthermore, as nowadays most schools and colleges are still using textbooks as their main references in the process of education though they sometimes use television to help students understand, books are still playing a significant role in the process of education. Television are thought more to be a facility for entertainment than a tool for education by most people now.
In sum, I admit the fact that we indeed gain many benefits from television, but we should not overlook the effects of books, where we can find the concentration of our forefathers' wisdoms. The importance of books in learning process cannot be replaced by television at least insofar and the notion that we can learn as much as watching television.
