TOPIC: ISSUE38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
WORDS: 751        TIME: 1:20:00          DATE: 2006-12-23

A recent survey indicates that young people in their teens spend the vast majority of their spare time watching TV rather than talking with other family members and their friends. This phenomenon might bring quite a few negative effects, among which the unfavorable influence on the reading habit could be one of the most remarkable. It is probably true that people could learn just as much, if not more by watching TV rather than by reading books. However, the true value of reading lies in the acting of reading itself which is an important exercise of the mind rather than sheer acquiring of information and knowledge without brainpower to understand them just as watching TV does. Though television has became an integral part of our daily lives, reading books as a way of learning which is still playing a irreplaceable role merits further emphasis.

Admittedly, television serves as an effective assistance to traditional education through reading books. As a medium, television can transmit vivid images which have magical capability of attracting the attention of children and adults alike. Especially for children who are more prone to comprehend visual information than abstract characters or numbers, television is useful teaching tool. A well-produced television program can be a tremendous vehicle for teaching while simultaneously entertaining person. For example, educational programs in Discovery Channel can provide latest news and discoveries about mysterious phenomena happening on the earth and present them by moving pictures in the form of video to vividly recreate those images right in front of the viewer's eyes. A famous documentary film named March of the Penguins virtually and graphically exposes the unique proliferating and surviving patterns of these lovely penguins living in the Antarctic the coldest region in the world unapproachable in an entire lifetime for common people.

Nevertheless, one of major disadvantages of television is that it is more as entertainment rather than education. It is apparent that television stations operate profit enterprise which should thrive on advertising dollars. In general, people prefer watching entertaining programs without using their minds to educational programs that actually impart knowledge to them. Evidence can be found in the weekly television ratings conducted by CCTV one of the most famous television station in China, in which suggest that programs of most popularity are comedy, soap operas or inane game show. Consequently, most programs driven by commercial orientation are replete with entertaining but less with educational ones in that the latter are less profitable. As result of that, TV programs are responsible for diminishing judicious thoughts of viewers by stuffing meaningless popular entertainment programs and advertising slogan of sponsors. The replacement of educational, profound and intellectual programs by meaningless so-called high audience rating programs only render television inappropriate educational resource.

Furthermore, comparing with reading, watching TV tends to create passive viewers and minimize ability of abstract thinking. All images transmitted by TV is so direct that people can understand it without further, though and active thinking process of their minds. On the contrary, reading can stimulate minds. The significance of reading is its requirement for the brain of the readers to work. Books contain the collective experience and knowledge which expressed in written language carrying the utmost function as inheritance and dissemination of ancient wisdom. Imagination and comprehension of the written word exercise our mind and enhance human talents of abstract thought, logical dialogue. In this sense, books can improve reader's mind by encouraging them to read, digest and ruminate of texts, essays and speeches, while, television simply display straight issues without demanding of thorough thoughts.

In addition, books are more convenient learning measures than televisions. People can read books at anywhere and at anytime they want due to its advantage of portability. While there must be equipped necessary appliances and enough space for people adopting television as learning tool. Moreover, many less-developed countries are too poor to provide televisions for their citizens. For these people, the books are practical and efficient channels for them to obtain knowledge.

In summary, television and books both have their good points when it come to the ability to disseminate knowledge. The respective benefits of these two methods brought lie in different area, of which the former one can provide innovative educational method and the latter one help people develop better brainpower. It is irresponsible to throw statement that reading is not as important as it was before. Watching TV and reading books are not mutually exclusive choices. People can use the two medium as complementary resources for learning.

Admittedly, television serves as an effective assistance to traditional education through reading books. As a medium, television can transmit vivid images which have magical capability of attracting the attention of children and adults alike. Especially for children who are more prone to comprehend visual information than abstract characters or numbers, television is (a)useful teaching tool. A well-produced television program can be a tremendous vehicle for teaching while simultaneously entertaining person. For example, educational programs in Discovery Channel can provide latest news and discoveries about mysterious phenomena happening on the earth and present them by moving pictures in the form of video to vividly recreate(?recur those images right in front of the viewer's eyes. A famous documentary film named March of the Penguins virtually and graphically exposes the unique proliferating and surviving patterns of these lovely penguins living in the Antarctic the coldest region in the world unapproachable in an entire lifetime for common people.(这句话得断句,后面分析下纪录片怎样比看书更有效的可能会更好 )
Nevertheless, one of major disadvantages of television is that it is more as entertainment rather than education. It is apparent that television stations operate profit enterprise which should thrive on advertising dollars.(上句话什么意思?television stations are driven by profits?) In general, people prefer watching entertaining programs without using their minds (?) to educational programs that actually impart knowledge to them. Evidence can be found in the weekly television ratings conducted by CCTV(逗号) one of the most famous television station in China, in which suggest that programs of most popularity are comedy, soap operas or inane game show. Consequently, most programs driven by withcommercial orientation are replete with entertaining but less with (lacking/scant of )educational ones in that the latter (ones) are less profitable. As result of that, TV programs are responsible for diminishing judicious thoughts of viewers by(?) stuffing meaningless popular entertainment programs and advertising slogan of sponsors.(换一种表达可能会更好…cause …./ because of their meaningless…) The replacement of educational, profound and intellectual programs by meaningless so-called high audience rating programs only render television inappropriate educational resource.(上一段刚说电视节目可以提供教育帮助,下段有说很多电视节目都没有意义,段首可以转折一下,小部分虽然很有用,但大多数电视节目都是用来娱乐的)
