Is the function of science to reassure and is the purpose of art to upset? The speaker claims so. I agree that in some aspects science does reassure us while the(前面的science没加the,这里对应一下也不要加了吧) art upsets us, and both bear certain values. However, there are in this world some situations(situation) in which science doesn't perform its function of reassuring and art is not necessarily for the purpose of upsetting.
Admittedly, science serves as the ultimate solution of pressing problems and renders reassurance to people under varieties of adverse surroundings. Consider, for instance, the outbreak of bird flu-the epidemic which shocked the world and caused worldwide panic to some degree. Due to the epidemic, the livestock-raising industry was seriously jeopardized and the income of livestock farmers was largely affected. Fortunately, science at this time is available to help tackle the problem. Thanks to science and the scientists working within the field, the epidemic is brought under control and people all over the world are reassured that by appropriate scientific methods and reasonable prevention(这里最好加个逗号)the pandemic will sooner or later be eradicated and disappear finally. Simply put, science is to reassure in situations like the above one.
As for art, one compelling example can well illustrate how art in our modern time upsets people. You must have heard of or seen in an actual situation ¡°Naked art" which portrays a man or usually a woman with nothing covering(我怎么感觉是covers) the body. It is not hard to imagine what this art has brought about for us. A couple of months ago there held a so-called "Naked art exhibition" in the city where I am currently living in. The exhibition drew widespread attention across the city and even neighboring cities and a large number of ¡°art fans" came to applaud the event. Nevertheless, I am not sure how many people were there for the purpose of art and what influences(influence) this "Naked art exhibit" had on the city and the residents in it. In my observation, the exhibition brought about more negative influence than the artistic values it could possess, especially, for those young visitors who may have never seen such a "naked body" before and may be attempted to do something wrong. So, under such a circumstance, art does upset people.
哦,还可以用自己身边发生的事例啊。。。很形象的例证^^
However, in some (other) cases, science is to upset, while art is to reassure. One need look no further than the research of clone to understand the science which upsets people. Admittedly, from a scientific standpoint, the study of clone will with no doubt help us gain fresh insights(insight) into the development of biological organism, but when assessed from ethic and religious points of view, it goes too far and certainly offends some peoples, thus disappointing(disappoints) them. Under such a circumstance, there is no denying that science serves to upset rather than reassure. When it comes to art, it certainly reassures us in the situation where the aesthetic sensation aroused by the artistic works endows us with the feelings that we are receiving intimations from a realm quite different from the one we are now living in.(这句N长,偶看不懂)And it's often these intimations that reassure us and encourage us to go on struggling even when we are confronted with incredibly difficult scenarios. Hence, in these situations science works negatively, while art functions to satisfy us.
To sum up, to decide whether science functions to reassure and whether art is for the purpose of upsetting depends largely on the real situation in which each has its own merits. Science can reassure, while art can upset, and vice versa.
