【题目2"In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."【翻译】为了提高大学的教学质量,所有的教职员工应该去校外参加一些和他们教的课程相关的工作
提纲:
不完全赞成作者的观点。
(1) 部分肯定作者的观点,就是教师应该将理论和实际结合起来,比如说石油的勘探,矿山的开采,以及其他能源的开发利用。
(2)作者的观点极端化了,一个研究基础科学以及纯理论的人就没有必要出去参加与室外的工作,比如说数学,历史和表演艺术。

I don’t agree with the speaker totally that all faculties in college should be required to participate into outside work relevant to their profession. To say this, the speaker must have overlooked the fact that there are various other academic courses such as mathematics, history, and even art that don’t need such an experience. Before making our own judgment about whether outside experience is essential, we should ensure that we have acquired much information about the course.

(1) 部分肯定作者的观点,就是教师应该将理论和实际结合起来,比如说石油的勘探,矿山的开采,以及其他能源的开发利用。

Admittedly, faculty with outside experience always bring fresh insights and a contagious excitement about the subjects they actively engage in into classes where the power and charm of knowledge in books can be adequately displayed. Outside experience acquired by the faculty would serve as a powerful catalyst which plays an essential role on cultivating students’ creativity and curiosity. This is especially true in geosciences and energy science, where faculty might have participated into the actual work of oil exploration, mine exploitation or solar, wind and water utilization. Such experience provides them with better understanding of the knowledge imparted in class to demonstrate techniques and methods, and make their students sitting in class feel that they would have gone to the filed and understand better about what the teacher talks. This kind of process demobilizes the boring atmosphere of classes and arouses student’s interests and curiosity that cause them spending more time in courses which can guarantee not only a high score but also a good performance in school. From this perspective, the outside work participated by faculty would be a useful supplement to the book education. Briefly, faculty need outside work experience.

However, the statement fails to consider that in certain other academic areas a professor’s academic duties will not typically involve practical works of the sort that occurs outside the academia. In pure mathematics or theoretical physics where formula and logical relation lead a predominant role, we can derive and deduce new formula and axioms based on existing theory and logical relation, For example, the derivation of Einstein’s mass-energy equation, which brought about the birth of the first atomic bomb, is only the integration of some axioms in mathematics and inner relation of forces within atoms in physics. Einstein actually took part in Menhaden project, but it is not Einstein himself but the theory brought about several years ago that brings along the bomb which has tremendous power and is being thought as a tragedy in human’s history. Can we say that the theoretical derivation make Einstein involve in outside work? The answer is of course not. In history, there is also no profession to speak of outside academia. After all, what work outside academia is there for professors of history? We cannot return to the era of sensational events. In order to make clear what results in a dynasty’s destruction we still need to turn back to books and other historic documents. In performing arts, what we essentially need are feeling and watching the techniques and styles demonstrated by the teachers. There is also no outside academia for teachers to acquire.

To sum up, in some academic areas we really need outside work to enrich faculty’s insights which could provide them with vivid teaching performance in classes and based ob which students can actively participate into and benefit from it, whereas in other areas such as mathematics, history and performing arts, the outside work is either unavailable or unnecessary. Therefore, to decide whether college faculty should work outside lies on what kind of academic areas he engages in.
