回复 #1 aefiter 的帖子
Issue103 <米国有米小组aefiter第8次作业> 欢迎指教
TOPIC: ISSUE103 - "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
WORDS: 532 TIME: 0:41:00 DATE: 2007-1-4
Historical studies are an essential discipline for development of society. Since ancient Rome and Greek empire, historical recorders had formed an independent group of people in the society of those times. Whether the historical study is relevant to our daily lives, or is simply the idiosyncratic pursuit by some individuals for their own interests, historical study demonstrates its indispensable role as other kinds of inquiries, such as natural science, political science, and humanities.
The prominent value of historical study for humanity daily lives is primarily epitomized by its specialty to portray us contemporary people's lifestyles, political structures, and scientific development levels. [这个thesis写的很好,但后文得展开没有呼应到这个Thesis]These features help immensely to position people living in modern society.
For ordinary people, the education of history, either worldwide or domestic, can grant us how well we are living in a highly advanced material civilization. For people living in one thousand years ago, they may never imagine the wide use of Internet as global exchange method for information. However, by virtue of historical study, people living in contemporary ages are well informed with how our high-speed electronic industry is evolved from very primeval technology one thousand year before. This clarity of our identities has somewhat extended our scope of view, rendering us to know where our society's future lies.
Nevertheless, the criterion to evaluate the value of historical study is not singly determined by its value to our daily lives.
One of the branches of historical study -- the study of antiquities, is a typical example to demonstrate its close relationship with our daily lives.[这里有点疑惑,这段不是讲和daily lives无关得历史研究得value吗? 怎么变成了close relationship with our daily lives] Many pursuers would calculate on one historical item's price and work assiduously to make profit out of these activities. As this business somehow adds amusement to human lives, its value to the whole society is limited. [后面不是提到了对社会稳定得作用吗?怎么这里是limited 呢?]After all, the exchange of those antiquities can never bring more value to our society, but rather exhaust social resources and generate an unique profession called connoisseur.[好句]While pursuits such as antiquity collection contributes little to the overall well-being of our society, some kinds of historical study, especially those with little bond to our daily lives, have been contributing to the social stability till now.[前面这部分得逻辑没有很看懂] With historical study revealing the evolution of social structure from the remote past to industrial revolution, we have opportunity to identify the schematic trajectory of society, a path from savage to civilization, from ignorance to enlightenment, and from simple exchange economic to capitalism. Today's government will know more details of how one form of social structure is overturned and the other more advanced substituted for that underdeveloped social structure. Guaranteed by this information, modern government will function more meticulously to avoid the mistakes reflected by history.
To sum up, the historical study has the palpable value to our daily lives, as we perceived from our historical education, and some recreational realm suAch as research of antiquities. However, the value of history is never confined to the mere information it provides to ordinary people. From a higher level, historical study will be the think tank, as well as an enormous treasury for political leaders and government, which provide caution, alarm, and advice to the future of the society, even this function are little noticed and perceived by ordinary people.[总结很好]
