The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.

"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

In this argument, the arguer recommends that all the stores should stock primarily domestic cheeses. To justify the claim, the arguer provides the evidence that cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin(WI) are the best selling cheeses in their newest store. In addition, he cites the result of a recent survey from Cheeses of the World Magazine that there is an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. This line of reasoning is flawed in several aspects.

First of all, the fact that domestic cheddar cheeses from WI were the best-selling cheeses does not necessarily imply that cheeses from WI were sold very well in other area throughout the United States. There is also the possibility that the newest store was placed in WI; maybe people around the store kept in continual contact with people in WI; or perhaps the newest store was lunching a sales promotion campaign at the moment. In addition, the claim gives little evidence to prove other domestic cheeses could be sold well throughout the country. Without considering and ruling out respective national sales, the arguer cannot convince me that people favor domestic cheeses over imported ones.

Secondly, the arguer provides no evidence that the survey's respondents are representative of the over-all people throughout the country. Lacking such evidence, it is entirely possible that people preferring domestic cheeses had not subscribed the magazine, or some other people favoring imported ones might not mail back questionnaires. Even though the survey’s respondents are representative, the possibility cannot also be excluded that most people still prefer imported cheeses while there is just an increasing preference for domestic ones. In short, without better evidence that the survey is statistically reliable the arguer cannot rely on it to draw any firm assumptions about people’s inclination toward cheeses.

Thirdly, the arguer claims that the best way to improve profits is to stock primarily domestic cheeses. This might not be the case. Factors such as friendly service, a variety of kinds of cheeses, pleasant environment and etc., all have some bearing on the extent of the boost of profits. Without concerning all these factors, we cannot decide which one is the best and they might not be ultimately exclusive.

In sum, the arguer's claim is unpersuasive. To bolster it more convincing evidence is needed that domestic cheeses are most favored in the whole country. To better assess the strength of the recommendation I would need more information about the demographic profile of the survey's respondents. It would be also helpful to obtain information of other factors which associates with profits.
