Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."
WORDS: 683          TIME: 0:44:29          DATE: 2007-1-6

Position: 同意前部分,有倾向地否定后部分
1. 社会化对社会的影响
2. 学校采取的社会化教育
3. 父母的作用
4. 不足之处
As people often say, "Children are the future of our nation", the speaker's assertion on the importance of socializing the children is fundamentally correct. However, the speaker underestimate the ability of the society on raise children, even there is still some weakness in the education approaches.

The future will be mainly constructed and conducted by the people who are young in the present. They have to face various persons, to cooperate with other countries, to debate with the opposites, to exchange the information from the outside. What will happen if they have no idea on how to be a social man? They will be confined in the own limited world, knowing nothing about acquiring various ideas. They will find difficulties in talking with others and expressing themselves. They will lose self-identity and self-awareness in the complex society. If this happens on a few persons, the effect is only on individual level. However, if this is a prevalence in the whole society, who have the ability to manage the public missions, who have the talent to conduct the business, who have the features to lead the citizens? The society may be replete with confusion, suspicion, and complain Therefore it is the way that children are socialized today that determines the destiny of society.

Fortunately, whoever the educators, governors, or the parents have the foresight on this issue. Their endeavor on socialize children is evident in either schools or homes. The teachers in the kindergarten often design games which require the kids to cooperate with each other to get a goal. They teach the kids to play scenarios to help them understand the social roles and their specific behaviors, like father, mother, nurse, police, and journalist. Thus from the very young age, children begin to learn the social specialization and identify the responsibilities of each vocations and the way to be a moral man.
Later in the middle school, to high school and college, children encounter more and more social lessons. They are often encouraged to express their ideas to the classmates and teachers. The teachers always distribute team-work to the students, thus the children can find the cooperative way to deal with the homework and extend this skill in their later life. They also learn to respect others and how to solve conflict, or comprise. The sports held in the school are another important area for children to take participant into a group. From the class to the playground, children are cultivated to be a person living with others.

In the home, parents pay more and more attention to children's emotion intelligence nowadays. They promote the children to be responsible for the things they do. They encourage children to join communities and hold parties which give the chance of the children to communicate with friends, or others from different fields. The children are taught how to understand other's feelings and praised when they help others. Through these activities, children attain the sense of sympathy to look from others' standpoint and the skills to treat various communication situations.

Admittedly, sometimes the overemphasis on some special aspects of children impedes their socialization. For instance, the schools may pay over attention on children's examination which may mislead the students' attention. The media make little effort on educating children to socialize but on entertaining them only. Additionally, the limited resources and educated ways make the socialization less efficiency. The teachers have not enough time to teacher each student how to communicate with others according each one's characteristics. There may few opportunity for children to get familiar with the society, leaving them isolated in the home. The parents may not know how the children behave in other situations other than in the homes, so they have no idea on how to guide their behaviors at that time. Some of them may be over-confidence on their children. Or some may educate their kid by punishment which is not an appropriate way.

In sum, the society, including schools and families, have recognized the significance of socializing children, because of the its definite importance of not only the children itself but also the whole world. However, there is still a long way to go to develop a complete system to aid children how to be a social person. Effort is needed from schools, families and other social organizations.

Child rearing and socialization
The American sociologist Talcott Parsons believed that the two most important functions of the modern family are the primary socialization of children and the stabilization of adult personalities through marriage and the raising of children. His own concern was particularly with the middle-class American family, but these important aspects of family life are also applicable much more widely. In the present context it is worthwhile to look especially at primary socialization.
Primary socialization refers to the training of children during their earliest years, whereas secondary socialization refers to later influences on the development of the child's personality and learning activities, such as his involvement with teachers and with other children at school. Primary socialization is in most societies carried out essentially within the family as part of child rearing. In the modern family, parents take responsibility for raising and teaching their children such basic things as language and correct behaviour. Toilet training, teaching children how to eat correctly, and encouraging children to get along with others are all aspects of child rearing. However, it is not only these more mundane aspects of behaviour that children learn. Children are also implicitly encouraged to develop the values of the parents and of the society in which they live. In American society, which was Parsons' main concern, these values include independence, motivation for achievement, and competition. In other societies, different values, such as cooperation and egalitarianism, may be stressed. Yet the principle behind primary socialization in different societies is the same: the development of social values must be achieved in an environment of love and security, as is found in the ideal family anywhere in the world.
Few families are ideal, however. Studies of the families of emotionally disturbed children have shown that unsatisfactory relationships between husbands and wives can have detrimental effects on children. Sometimes a child is used as a scapegoat. The parents blame or even physically abuse the child in order to cover up their own difficulties. In such a case, the child often fails to develop the values the parents wish to instill in him, developing instead antisocial habits leading to deviant behaviour in later life. Indeed, the cycle may be repeated if such a person in time marries, has a family of his own, and treats his children in the same way. Nonetheless, there is no reason to suppose that all children of unsatisfactory marriages are treated in such a way or fail to overcome the difficulties they have as children.
Some social scientists have even suggested that the isolated nuclear family, as it exists in Western industrialized societies, is to blame for the social ills found in those societies. They claim that in the past more support was offered from the wider kin network and from the community as a whole—as is still the case in less-developed parts of the world. The British psychiatrists R.D. Laing and David Cooper suggested that the modern family is dysfunctional in that, by its very nature, it forces upon children an undue emphasis on obedience to authority. These negative viewpoints aside, most experts as well as most parents agree that the primary socialization process in the modern family offers benefits both to the child and to the parents.

SocializationThe process by which personality is formed as the result of social influences is called socialization. Early research methods employed case studies of individuals and of individual societies (e.g., primitive tribes). Later research has made statistical comparisons of numbers of persons or of different societies; differences in child-rearing methods from one society to another, for example, have been shown to be related to the subsequent behaviour of the infants when they become adults. Such statistical approaches are limited, since they fail to discern whether both the personality of the child and the child-rearing methods used by the parents are the result of inherited factors or whether the parents are affected by the behaviour of their children.
Problems in the process of socialization that have been studied by experimental methods include the analysis of mother–child interaction in infancy; the effects of parental patterns of behaviour on the development of intelligence, moral behaviour, mental health, delinquency, self-image, and other aspects of the personality of the child; the effects of birth order (e.g., being the first-born or second-born child) on the individual; and changes of personality during adolescence. Investigators have also studied the origins and functioning of achievement motivation and other social drives (e.g., as measured with personality tests).
Several theories have stimulated research into socialization; Freudian theory led to some of the earliest studies on such activities as oral and anal behaviour (e.g., the effect of the toilet training of children on obsessional and other “anal” behaviour). Learning theory led to the study of the effects of rewards and punishments on simple social behaviour and was extended to more complex processes such as imitation and morality (e.g., the analysis of conscience).
