5、"A nation should require all its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college rather than allow schools in different parts of the nation to determine which academic courses to offer."
1.assure the education quality(China)
2.easy for migration
3.suppress people's individuality
Whether a nation should assure all its students to study the same national curriculum before college has long been an issue. Different country has taken different strategies, some countries, like Russia and China, provide national curriculum and requires all students to study them, because this would be convenient for authorities to manage the education quality and for people to migrate to other area; however, some other countries, such as America and some western European countries, do not have this requirement since this will suppress students' progress in individuality. In my point of view, I support the earlier idea for its advantages to both students and society.
Firstly, a nation wide curriculum will help the education authorities to form a systematic and scientific evaluation system, which will ensure and promote the country's education quality. The authorities, who are more responsible for students' academic development than schools, can hire professionals about education, do nation wide surveys and provide more objective information, thus easy to make an objective comparison about schools between an area and another. By providing evaluation result and by people's credit to national agencies, education authority can assure a competing relationship among the schools, which would stimulate schools to provide better education, thus advances national education system. For example, China has a special evaluation system. They categorize middle schools into "Key" schools and common schools. Based on this "Key" school system, China is providing more and more Ph.D candidates to top laboratories in European and North America. On the contrary, this example also proves that students in America are not competitive enough in academic aspects, thus illustrates its decreasing education quality in primary education phase.
Secondly, since students all over the country share the same curriculum, it would be easy for them to transfer to another school or even another area. As the world's economic systems are merging from regional to national, or even into an international economic system, the possibility of people or a family's migration is ever increasing. In this case, students before college, as a dependent member in family, will inevitably be affected and forced to go to another school to continue his or her study. If the curriculum varies from one school to another, it would be difficult for students to find a proper new school and adapt to their new study environment. Again, in Capital city of China, there are lots of elementary school for children of migrants. Migrated from various areas of china with different grades, these students can still be classified into several grades and continue their study without difficulty.
However, just as one coin has two sides, a uniform curriculum doesn't assure everything, and school’s right to choose curriculum has its unique merits. This is specially showed in the problem of promote people's individuality. Students, grown up in different environments, certainly have their own hobbies and dislikes, and people in different region share different culture. Just as education science claims, education process should be adapted according to people's characteristics. A national wide curriculum would be hard to provide proper education to every one, and thus would not help cultivating or even suppress people's individuality, which is of vital importance for people's progress and success.
In conclusion, despite the fact that a nation wide curriculum would likely to lead to problems in cultivating people's individuality, it provides convenience for both education authorities and students. So, as the statement asserts, I also believe a nation wide curriculum would be a better choice. |
