研究界的一些非主流领域，比如星象学、占卜术和意念及超自然探索，在社会中起到了很重要的作用，因为它们满足了人们无法从主流科学获得的需求。


1.非主流学科满足了人们对主流学科无法解释的现象的好奇。
2.当面对人们对主流学科无法解释的现象时，非主流学科一定程度上在社会中起到了稳定人心的作用。
3.但是， 这个社会仍然时主流学科在其关键作用，因为他们对社会的贡献更大。

I agree with the speaker that nonmainstream areas of inquiry satisfied the human's curiosity toward problems which haven’t been addressed by mainstream science. But when it comes to its importance to the world, I do not believe that it plays an more important role when compared with mainstream science.

I agree that nonmainstream studies have fulfilled people's curiosity toward phenomena that are not explained by mainstream science. For example, when we were young, perhaps everyone asked his/her parents why it rains. In this modern society, most of us will be told that it relates to the portion of water vapor reserved in the clouds. However, in ancient China, the quite limited scientific research result can not help people to form a reasonable explanation, so children were always told that it was the dragon hidden in the sky who decided when and where to rain. Though this science fiction like explanation seems to be ridiculous today, but it really helped people to form a complete understanding of the world. What is more, since much of the phenomena can be addressed by either mainstream science or nonmainstream studies, people can be more concentrated on their own work, which promotes the development of our society.

Apart from satisfying people's curiosity, these nonmainstream studies also relieve people from the scarce caused by these non explained phenomena. Just as illustrated in last paragraph, were ancient people not have this kind of explanation, they would completely fall into disaster since agriculture was the absolute main business in that period and can largely be influenced by rain. Even in modern society, we still depend on nonmainstream studies to acquire self comfort, just as many people check the horoscope of their constellations to see what would happen and what should they do in the coming days. Despite the fact that even people know these forecast has no scientific foundations, they just accept them because they can expel the anxiety caused by not knowing them.
Though these nonmainstream sciences have helped people to satisfy the curiosity and expel scarce, compared with the contribution of modern mainstream science, it is hard to say the nonmainstream one is of vital importance to our society. Equipped with the fast developing science and technology, mankind has revolutionary changed the natural world and itself. And accompanied with these great achievements, the influence of nonmainstream science has dramatically decreased. For example, because of the scientific proof of the relation between water vapor and rain, people in China now no longer believe rain is dominated by the imagined dragon hidden in the sky. And all over the world, all kinds of explanation has been taken place by the true one. Although the nonmainstream studies are till active and influencing people, its effect is decreasing.

Totally speaking, it is true that the nonmainstream studies have their own indispensable effects on satisfying and assuring people, but it ever and never means these studies are vital to mankind. What is more, with the rapid development of modern science, I believe that the mainstream studies’ influence will be less and less.
