研究界的一些非主流领域，比如星象学、占卜术和意念及超自然探索，在社会中起到了很重要的作用，因为它们满足了人们无法从主流科学获得的需求。

提纲：赞同作者的观点，但是有一定的危害性
（1）       必须承认，非主流科学在社会的发展和人的需求中起到了重要作用，满足了人们心理和精神上的需要。
（2）       而且，非主流科学能够合理解释一些主流科学不能解释的问题，这对社会的发展是必要的。
（3）       但是过分依赖非主流科学有一定的危害性。

It is necessary to acknowledge that today more and more people prefer to appeal to non-mainstream science such as astrology, fortune-telling and psychic and paranormal pursuits rather than mainstream science to satisfy their needs. Non-mainstream science can content people with the psychological and mental requirements and explain hosts of things that mainstream science cannot explain that it is not only necessary but helpful in people’s life, but undue relying on the non-mainstream science may undermine individuals’ and even the society’s development.

Admittedly, non-mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology play a vital role in society to satisfy people’s psychological and mental requirements. It is especially righteous in ancient society where some beliefs and other holy symbols used as a representation to maintain the profits of governing class. For example, in Chinese history, normal civilian were instilled with the thought that the empire was born with imperial blood and they were assigned by the deity that their status was higher than others which cannot be infringed. Through observing the stars, they predicted their fate and arranged their activities’ schedule, such as which day would be a fine day to go out and when would be the best time to holding majestic ceremonies. They wanted to keep their absolutely administrative status unchallenged and always rested on wizards’ words and their unreasonable predictions to obtain the transient balance between ideal and reality in their heart that they could live a long time and govern well their people. It was just this kind of mind that contributed greatly to the society’s development and the improvement of people’s life.

Moreover, non-mainstream science can explain lots of which mainstream science cannot explain that would be a effective way to satisfy people’s curiosity to the unknown world. With current scientific and technological level, the principles of unknown activities happened in the ancient time seems clear to us, but not all the things coming from ancient times or brought about by modern life can be reasonable interpreted by the mainstream science. Understandably, to make clear those unknown things many people shift their attention from mainstream science to non-mainstream inquiries. For example, Newton as the greatest physicist devoted all his energy and time to three laws of mechanics, and tried the best to integrate various field theories in different disciplines into the unified field theory. At last he failed and attributed these to the great work of the god because he could not explain the mutual relationship between them but believed that there must be certain association. Even if Newton appeal to the god to explain the puzzle in his study, we have reason to believe that non-mainstream science is also an effective means to help one know the unknown world.

However, although certain amount of concentration on non-mainstream can comfort people and render them clear with the unknown world, undue emphasis on the non-mainstream science would undermine individual’s and even the society’s development. Individual’s development mainly depends on the imparting of mainstream sciences rather than non-mainstream science. If we know the bad fate of a new-born baby in advance, should we pay more attention and use more resources to the education of this baby? We appeal to mainstream science because no one can predict the future of an individual and one needs scientific knowledge and basic social skills to enrich him that would be the guarantee to accommodate to the society. Nowadays, many people who live in backwards village and even big metropolis rely themselves heavily on superstition and they believe only if they are more devoted to the god that they would accept the god’s mercy. If most people appeal to god rather than knowledge from mainstream science, it would unavoidably undermine individual’s enthusiasm to learn mainstream knowledge that would do great harm to the society’s stableness and development.

In conclusion, we can focus certain attention on non-mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology and fortune-telling or others, because it can satisfy individual’s psychological and mental needs and create opportunity to make one know the unknown world that mainstream science cannot explain. However, undue emphasis on it would undermine individual’s enthusiasm and conviction to learn basic mainstream knowledge that play an essential role in society. So we should concentrate mainly on mainstream science and not ignore the importance of non-mainstream science.
