Will tourism soon become obsolete in that we can become familiar with a great many places that we have never visited through television and worldwide computer connections, as the speaker asserts? I agree that everyday life has been greatly changed with the invention of television and computer. One aspect is that people can visit a lot of places through them. However, I disagree with the speaker's unfair assertion that tourism will soon be obsolete.
To begin with, with the development of modern science and technology it is true that we can know a myriad of places that we have never been to through television and computer. Because of the fast living and working pace of modern society, not everyone has enough time and money to go to visit the places that he or she is interested in. So the television and World Wide Web are a great help for us to get knowledge of these places we are interested in. Consider, for instance, we can watch an introducing movie about the scene of Hawaii during the noon break while having a cup of coffee in front of our televisions. Or we can search some information of the Alps Mountain on internet such as photos of skiing while dreaming one day we could afford to visit there. Thus, with the help of televisions and worldwide computer connections, we can know a series of places that we have never been to.
However, tourism will never become obsolete as the speaker asserts in two aspects. First, despite of the limited and passive information from television and internet, to gain information of places which we are interested in does not amount to visit the real places. To our common sense, the spirit of tourism is to feel, touch and relax in a real place, which is a sensory experience. If we want to obtain realer and more complete information of the place, we must visit there by ourselves. Secondly, it can never be substituted to visit places escaping from troublesome work by surfing the internet. For example, you can play some relax games on the beach of California and make yourself happy and relax. However, you can never touch the sand of beach though you can watch some video about California seaside with your tired eyes. Therefore, to visit the place can never be substituted by television and computer, and tourism will not become obsolete as the speaker claims.
Additionally, with the help of television and worldwide computer connections, the development of tourism will be stimulated. Through television and worldwide computer connections, we find information that we are curious and interested and we hope to visit the place someday besides the tempting tourism advertisements filled in televisions and internet. Moreover, the internet can make the tourism more convenient. For example, we can book rooms in a foreign hotel on internet before we start the journey and we can also buy airline tickets back before we go there. Meanwhile, we can know the weather condition from weather forecast on television and then make our tourism plans. Thus, television and worldwide computer connections can facilitate tourism and make it more and more popular.
In sum, people can be knowledge of a great many places they have never visited through televisions and worldwide computer connections. And with the development of modern technology and economy, more and more people will have enough time and financial capacity to visit places they are interested in. On balance, tourism will be more and more popular as more and more people will choose tour to relax in this fast pace modern society. |
