ISSUE31 - "Money spent on research is almost always a good investment, even when the results of that research are controversial."

What the speaker means is that the research is worthy of money whatever its consequences, that is any kind of research should be supported. Fundamentally, I concede that it is valuable to invest researches, but when the research’s results are controversial, it should be careful to weigh the cost and benefit of the researches.

Generally, investment in researches is valuable and helpful, because the outcome of researches is often enormous either in increment of knowledge or improvement of life quality. In those basic researches, principles are discovered and theories are created. Thanks to the foundation of Bell laboratory, so that we can know better about the nature of the physical worlds. Similarly, the construction of Human Gene Program lead a revolutionary understanding of human's biological characteristics. Without researches, we may still in a superstitious period, confused about the life, and afraid of the future. The money spent on these labs, or programs satisfies our curiosity to the universe, bring out abundant wealth for our spirit -- that is the exploration and understanding of the world -- the manifest of human's wisdoms.

Meanwhile, in the applied territories of research, our material pursuit is also actualized. Transportation tools shorten distances between each other; media enriches people’s entertainment; medical care help individuals to be more healthy; and electrical technology accelerate the updating of information. Either from an economic or a social viewpoint, the investment in these applied researches is definitely deserved. For the factories or companies, the profit outweighs its input several times. For the people, the application of the research findings releases them from heavy jobs, homework and boring spare time. In retrospect, no centuries confronted the glorious and colorful life as today. What the financial input in individual research attains is the lasting profit of the whole society.

However, sometimes, the investment may be void or harmful for the humanity. Some studies are conducted by aimless researchers, who are so eager to do some researches to boast himself or achieve some positions. Also, some experiments are only repeats of previous process just without innovation. Additionally, some researches are funded by ambitious government which expects to threat other countries without considering the actual value and meaning. Money invested on these researches would be wasteful since there are quantity of problems that need financial support.

What is the worse, there is not a few researches bring destructive impact to human beings. For instance, the studies on nuclear have become the biggest threat to the world. The world would be easily destroyed by the nuclear weapons, when the war seems to exist with human's insatiable desire. The endeavor put into the researches of chemicals and biology causes the horrible biochemical weapon when these findings were applied to kill the lives. If people invest money in these project with sacrificing the well-being of mankind, they would acquire anything at last. Other studies may not bring so terrible and instant detriment, but do destroy the world we are living depend on in a dramatic speed. The leftover of some researches would pollute the environment, like chemical studies. The studies on wilder life through the artificial control of animal activities would disturb the ecological balance. When researches conflict with humanity  and natural rules, any investment on them would destroy the man themselves in the end. When life does no exist, money, power or anything else is nothing at all.

Admittedly, researches themselves are not right or wrong; it is the human's ambitions and greedy that threats the world. Unless people are all rational and responsible, are any researches encouraged. However, as this is still a dream at least in a short time, the investment on researches should be careful. When the results of the researches are controversial, humanity and the nature should be precedence in the concern.
