Issue36. The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.

People will always hold some viewpoints on the contributions andendeavors of their contemporaries, whether positive or negative. Thougheach one would try to be fair and justice in making his or her owndecisions, the conclusions, to a large extent, would indisputably belimited by the era and the knowledge one has. From this meaning, I tendto agree with the speaker that the greatness of individuals, yet alwaysappraised by contemporaries, could only be decided by their decedents.

Looking back into the long history of human civilization, we couldeasily find a list of names that enjoyed very few reputations from thesociety they lived, while after hundreds of years, be widely acceptedand remarked of their outstanding and valuable contributions.Beethoven’s symphony, at first be treated as “rude music”, finally beaccepted after his death and be described as an important milestone inmusic. Beethoven himself was treated as one of the few top genius inmusic realm. Beethoven’s symphony has never changed, what changed isthe way people look at it, the standard people put on it and the depththat people could understand it. The geniuses, together with theirmasterworks, usually show to be ahead of time, and exceed thecomprehension of their contemporaries. As time goes by and with peoplelearn more and more knowledge of that area, they would finally beaccepted. Just like the gold in the sand, the erosion with time willfinally let them shine in the sun.

While on the other hand, there are also some people, though highlypraised and accepted by their contemporaries, be challenged by thosewho live after them. Chairmen Mao of China, as the leader of Chineserevolutionary work and founder of new China, was the idol of almost allthe Chinese people during his reign. From year 1966 to 1976, Maoinvoked a nationwide “Great Culture Revolution”, advocated by hundredsof millions people at that time and last as long as ten years, innumerous pictures and videos recorded how enthusiastic people wereduring that period. Decades after, this movement was treated as “TenYear’s Disturbance”, and it is widely accepted by the people now thatthis movement actually caused the pause or even drawback of theeconomic development of China at that time. This kind of thingsactually happened in many countries. People’s ideas, thinking and theirreactions largely depend on the circumstance they are, reflect the erathey live, and based on the value system they have. Those kind oflimitations decide that when people make decisions, they actually notthat objective as their decedents could be, since the time not onlygives people more knowledge and full picture on the judgments, but alsoreveals to people what is the lasting value that precious to thesociety and to the human beings, this, as the most important standardto judge what is greatness, is a privilege that only give to ourdecedents.

It could not be denied that there are a great number of people, berecognized as great by their contemporaries also gain reputations fromthe people live after them. In these kinds of cases, we are fortunateto see that the estimation system and the standards been put on themhas not changed – it does not mean that people could decide thegreatness of the contemporaries, but the people after, using thelasting values, decide that their ancestors have chosen the “right”great people.

To sum up, whether be accepted by the contemporaries or not, people wholeave their remarkable names in the history are those be washed away bytime all the luxurious decorations, could leave some real values totheir decedents. And only the people who live after them, have theright way and ability to judge their greatness.

Looking back into the long history of human civilization, we couldeasily find a list of names that enjoyed very few reputations from thesociety they lived, while after hundreds of years, be widely acceptedand remarked of their outstanding and valuable contributions. For example Beethoven’s symphony, which was firstly at first be treated as “rude music”, finally beaccepted after his death and be recognized described as an important milestone inmusic. Beethoven himself was treated as one of the few top genius inmusic realm.in the realm of music 或者 in music  Beethoven’s symphony has never changed, what changed isthe way people look at it, the standard people put on it and the depththat people could understand it.

While on the other hand, there are also some people, though highlypraised and accepted by their contemporaries, be were challenged by thosewho live after them. Chairmen Mao of China,of China? As去掉,变成同位语 the leader of Chineserevolutionary work and founder of new China, was the idol of almost allthe Chinese people during his reign. From year 1966 to 1976, Maoinvoked a nationwide “Great Culture Revolution”, advocated by hundredsof millions people at that time and last as long as ten years, innumerous pictures and videos recorded how enthusiastic people wereduring that period. Decades after, this movement was treated regarded as “TenYear’s Disturbance”, and it is widely accepted by the people now thatthis movement actually caused the pause or even drawback of theeconomic development of China at that time.
