Argument140
The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."

The agument conlude that the university should offer Pofessor Thomas a promotion to Department Chairperson and a ten-thousand
dollar salary raise. To support the conlude the arguer provide the fact that her calasses is one of the largest in the university and she brought more money in research grants than the salary she received in the last two years. The argue also claims that without the raise and promotion she will leave the University. However, a colse scruity of the reasoning line find it have some some logical flaws.

At the first the arguer based the conclusiong on the assumption that the teaching and research abilities is the only prerequisite to promotion to Department Chairperson. But the common sense tell us that a people qulified for the Department Chairperson should have the ability to communicate with others and a highly skill of management and leadership, and a extrovent is better. However the argument did not give us any evidence showing that the Professor is good at communicat with others and leading others. And the argument did not provide the Professor's own opinion about the promotion. Perhaps the Professor is unwilling to receive the promotion because it will disturb the normal life and research activites. Therefor without such evidence the assumption is not persuasive at all.

Morever the argument wrongly assumes that the ability of teaching and reseraching is excelent or better than other teachers. The argument draws the assumption from the evidence that her classes are among the largest at the university and she brought more than 50000 money to the university in research grants. However there are several possible reasons why her classes are among the largest. For instance, perhaps the classes she teaching is some fundemental compulsory subjects like physics or mathematics. But the argument did not ruling out the possibility and hastily assumes the professror has a excellent ability of teaching. And the money she brought to the university exceeds her salary does not indicate her high level of research ability.

Futhermore the assumption that Professor will leave the university if she did not receive the raise and the promotion is not credible. There are no any evidence showing that the professor is not content with the current salary. Additionly the salary and the promotion are not the only factors influenceing her decision. The development chance, the academical reputationg and the living custom also make a important role in dicieding whether leaving the university. So the assumption that she will leave the university is indefensible.

In sum the agument is not credible and have some sever logical flaws.
