Our society is undergoing a process of rapid development in which science serves a leading role. Can a field of study advance significantly without introduction of outside knowledge and experience? I fundamentally agree with the speaker with the notion that the introduction of outside knowledge and experience is quite responsible for the significant advancement of one academic study. However, the speaker overlooks the important role the given knowledge and experts play.
To begin with, I fundamentally agree with the speaker that the introduction of outside knowledge, experience, methodology is quite responsible for the significant advancement of one field of study. The process of mutual interaction among different fields sparkles with wit and intelligence which inspires and creates new ideas, concepts, thoughts, etc. Our recorded history of science is replete with such examples. Some introduction of outside knowledge and experience leads to great discoveries which serve as landmarks throughout the development of science. For example, James Watson, a biologist, with the help of Francis Crick who majored in physics in his early time of research, discovered the molecular structure of nucleic acids which had ever been considered a fundamental mystery. This mystery gives answer to how genetic instructions are held inside organisms and how they are passed from one generation to another. And some other introduction gives a vital impact on some fields of inquiry so that these fields in turn undergo a more rapid of development. With the invention of a compound microscope, Robert Hooke introduced the word cell to describe tiny compartments in living things which marked the beginning of new perspective of biological investigation.
However, the speaker overstates the status of outsiders in the advancement of a field, ignoring the fundamental and determinate role of the given knowledge and experts. After all, all the relevant researches are based on the treasures our predecessors have passed to us. We absorb them, question them, utilize them, and benefit from them finally. It is the given theories that all the new ideas, discoveries and inventions originate from. In the early period of most elementary fields of study, they had no chance to get touch with outside subjects. Along with certain accumulation of inside knowledge and experience many eminent scientist accomplish their remarkable success with their own talents, skills, feeling, and understanding of science. Even though outsiders could provide vital nourishment, without our forerunners' intelligence, as well as a team of proficient and creative experts there would no fuel to ignite the inspiration, let alone significant advancement of this particular field.
Accordingly, both the outside and inside knowledge and experience together with experts is equally important to a certain field. Growing cooperation among scientist with various expertise not only help impede progress of disciplines involved but also facilitate the active interaction of them and generate many new-born cross disciplines. For example, the combination of biology, a science dealing with the living organisms, with chemistry, a science of matter at atomic to molecular scale, gives birth to the science biochemistry which serves as a new start point standing on the shoulders of the two original fields. Furthermore, as for some large-scale international science project, a group of government bodies and organizations along with experts from various fields must be embraced. The Human Genome Project is an international scientific endeavor that aims to decipher the complete genetic inheritance of human beings. It is established as an unprecedented, coordinated research project marshaling collaborative effort of hundreds of researchers. Due to huge advances in the field of genomics and computing technology, as well as widespread international cooperation, a rough draft of the genome was finished in 2000. The development of any field of study needs comprehensive cooperation.
To sum up, the speaker's assertion in not without merit that outsiders' knowledge and experience could offer an available opportunity to the development of the particular field. But at the same time, we cannot reach an extreme conclusion that, never can a field of study progress without the outsiders' benefaction for the relative independence of academic studies. Both the outside and inside aspects are equally important to the flourish of the field of study. |
