TOPIC: ISSUE29 - "Public figures such as actors, politicians, and athletes should expect people to be interested in their private lives. When they seek a public role, they should expect that they will lose at least some of their privacy."
Public figures, who are famous because of their great achievements or high authority in particular fields, such as actors, politicians, and athletes, indeed attract people's eyes to a large extent. I fundamentally agree the speaker's assertion that when public figures seek a public role, which concerned by all the people, they should expect that they will sacrifice some of their privacy. The speaker claims that public figures should expect people to be interested in their private lives. This view, in my opinion, is irrational in ignoring the harmful aspects caused by extreme concern to public figures and overlooking the free will of some public figures. To better present my view point let me illustrate it in details.
Admittedly, when people start to seek a public role, they should prepare for losing some of their privacy. On the one hand, citizens show great interests on public figures. For the public figures are popular to a large group of people, people tend to treat the stuff of public figures as a common topic, just like that people are used to talk about the weather when they meet. Therefore, as to the need of communication, all information about the public figures including private life is close noticed by the populace. One the other hand, the demands to know public figures stimulate the prosperity of the media industry. The media has developed with a dramatic speed to cater customers. The number of reporters, presses, the TV stations, and the websites has increased greatly. The technology also makes contribution to the media. The printer technology has been advanced; the photography tools are more effective; the computers linking in the internet are so magic that we can find news within a second. Under the siege of media, the public figures could hardly hide their private lives. Even enjoying a sunbath in a private beach, Chen, Xiaodong, a famous pop star of HongKong, was taken pictures by a telephoto lens.
However, the speaker irrationally asserts that many public figures should expect people to be interested in their private lives. First, although exposing their private lives could attract people’s attention and then lift their popularity. Many celebrities hope the media and people give them more privacy. Everybody’s right of privacy should be respected, including the public figures. Several actors once said if they have any chance, they hope to be a normal people, who can shop without sun glasses, travel without bodyguards, and fall in loving without pressure. Second, the extreme attention on public figure would do harm to themselves and relatives. Princess Diana, admired by thousands of people in the world, was dead in car crash because of trying to escape reporters. And the report on the death of Diana points out it is the media killed Princess Diana. Third, the over concentration to a public figure can cause great pressure and anxiety. Public figures should be discreet and careful almost all the time, for any inappropriate behavior might be reported to public and destroy their career. Bill Clinton is an example who suffered great pressure for his sexual scandal which was revealed by media. The last but not the least, there are some kinds of public figures, like athletes, want people to leave them alone, because too much concern on their private lives would inhibit their advancements. Such public figures usually prefer to dedicate themselves to pursue progress, thus tracing them for reporting their private lives would bother and annoy them, even worse, make bad influence to their work. Football player are willing to stay in the grass field doing practice rather than spending time on being interviewed by different media almost every day.
In summary, from what discussed above, we can safely draw a conclusion that the speaker is reasonable in pointing that public figures, when seeking a public role, should expect that they will lose some privacy. However, he fails to take into account the harmful influence of extreme concern and the wills to keep private lives of public figures.
