Issue160 [总频64]
"The most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Any leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little."

It is no escaping the fact that leaders play a vital role in the daily routine of certain realms. Does effective leadership require that a leader consistently follow his or her principles and objectives? I fundamentally agree with the speaker with the notion that leaders' strict commitment to the principles and objectives is quite responsible for inspiring his or her staff as well as facilitating the development of the enterprise. However, the speaker overlooks that popular opinions consist with leader's principles and objectives quite often. Leaders should also yield to popular will while adhering to their own principles.

To begin with, stubborn commitment to one's principles and objectives could serve an effective leader's interest in earning trust from his or her staff, which would raise credibility upon the decision towards enterprise. It is very important for an effective leader to build up a leading image, in that his or her staff always expect their leader to be endowed with ambition, wisdom, and capability. People want a leader who can lead them to a triumph. Conversely, was the leader not steadfastly committed to the principles and objectives, the staff might doubt whether the leader has made causal and unreasonable decision to make the team into troubles he or she would not abide by. Furthermore, by definite expressing the attitude toward the principles and objectives, the staff would understand the team's ultimate goals more clearly. For that matter, every member in the team will consider the enterprise a seamless whole to attain the achievement. In short, it is the commitment to principles and objectives that helps the leaders win their prestige as well as makes members embracing a wish for a better enterprise work more vigorously and more efficiently.

Moreover, the development of enterprise hinges on the principles and objectives which the leader consistently follows. Facing such a rapid progress of society, the leader should show great foresight and decisive action, which guides the march of enterprise. Once the leader is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion, the enterprise might miss the god-given opportunity for development. Take Rumin Zhang, the CEO of Haier Group, for example. Ever since the time of Haier's foundation, Zhang had considered about seeking to exploit the overseas market. Some people thought it was too hasty to do that, provided the international competition and diverse culture might bring enormous challenge which might result in the downfall of Haier Company. Nevertheless, Zhang strictly adhered to his objectives, learning experience from foreign companies and at the same time managing Haier assiduously. And now, Haier has become the third largest white goods manufacturer in the world. Had Zhang advocating exploitation for global market yet been persuaded by close advisors that domestic market would suffice Haier's survival, no doubt the company would have still maintained the initial scale. In a word, stubborn adherence to principles and objectives creates chances for the development of enterprise.

However, it is also essential for an effective leader to consider and examine popular opinions. Admittedly, sometimes shifts in popular opinions prevent leaders from decisive action which would irrevocably shake the leader's confidence in the principles and objectives they strictly follow. Just like a sailing ship in the sea which deviates from the usual path due to frequent winds and waves would not reach its destination. Yet, timely considering popular opinions could help the leader keep the pace of social advancement and cope with diverse situations. Furthermore, leaders' principles and objectives are not always mutually exclusive with popular opinions; actually the principles and objectives of almost all the successful leaders emerge from popular opinions. Wise leaders should devote themselves to principles and objectives catering to public, which would raise possibility for their future success. In this view of point, Franklin Roosevelt is a good example. At the bottom of the Great Depression, a quarter of the labor force was unemployed, the economy in collapse, and the nation in despair. Government should give the public confidence and the citizens also wish to see a fortitudinous government. With his proven leadership experience and intention to revitalize American economy, Roosevelt created the New Deal which consisted with the popular desirability and contributed to later recovery of the economy. Undoubtedly, to be an effective leader, one must also keep in touch with popular opinions.

In sum, the speaker's assertion is not without merit that it is quite important for an effective leader to follow particular principles and objectives. But at same time, we can not reach an extreme conclusion that never should leaders consider popular opinions. Wise leaders would devote themselves to principles and objective catering to popular will.
