TOPIC: ISSUE151 - "High-speed electronic communications media, such as electronic mail and television, tend to prevent meaningful and thoughtful communication."
WORDS: 516 TIME: 1:21:52 DATE: 2007-2-2
With the unprecedented developments of technology, contemporary people have changed the common way of communication gradually. High-speed electronic communications media, like electronic mail and television, has taken place of traditional methods such as mails wrote by hand and talks face to face. However, a controversy rises: whether those electronic communications tend to prevent meaningful and thoughtful communication. In my opinion, I believe that high-speed electronic communications are helpful to communication and do not hamper meaningful and thoughtful communication.
Admittedly, most of time, high-speed electronic communications tend to force us to answer as quickly as possible. Many people might have confronted with such situation. When the other person sent you a question through instant communication tools such as MSN, you are apt to made a decision and sent a message back soon, because it is not polite to make the other person wait on line for your answer too long. High-speed electronic communications media can let people who are quite distant physically communicate as they are face to face and can hear each other. Then If people reply the message after a long period of time, it looks like that people talked face to face but after each sentence there would be a weird and awkward silence. Nearly no people like such communication, thus, high-speed electronic communications media push us to make quick decision, and those quick answers would be hasty and even harmful.
However, quick answer does not mean meaningless and thoughtless. Many real-time situations need quick reply. For instance, If a building is on fire heavily, but the chief of firemen would be far away from the scene, he could order commands to firemen how to save more lives from that building with the help of automobiles. Though the chief laid commands quickly, these commands might be concluded from experience of many years and play an effective role on the fire accidents. Such quick replies are precious and significant to emergent events. Therefore, high-speed electronic communications media could make significant contributions on real-time events.
Moreover, the time saved by high-speed electronic communications can be used to think in a more in-depth way. When my parents were at my age, they contacted each other by mails wrote by hand, which would receive after a month. Now they learn how to use email, and send messages within a second. The time saved by high-speed electronic communications media is tremendous. We can make use of the time to make decisions considerate. Hereby, as people have enough time to think, the communication has possibility to become more meaningful and thoughtful. In addition, because the communication tools are high-speed, people can exchange more opinions in a shorter time, compared with the times without high-speed electronic communications media. Through these opinions exchange, meaningful and thoughtful conclusions might be brought out.
In conclusion, high-speed electronic communications media are helpful to make communications among people more effective and convenient. And as a tools, they do not prevent meaningful and thoughtful communication. People can choose any appropriate ways to communicate to ensure communication meaningful and thoughtful, no matter talking in a tea room face to face or sending an electronic mail.
